Looking for a carry gun and best price

Postby yojason on Wed Nov 16, 2011 12:34 pm

Hi all. I am looking to buy a 45ACP carry. I have heard that the Taurus pt145 and the 745 are pretty good guns and about the same size and the 9mm I carry. I am wondering if anyone knows where I an find one cheap. Used or new. I was also wondering if I should order out of state to avoid the tax on it and in case it might be cheaper in other states. Thanks for any information you guys might have.

Any tax-savings is usually negated by shipping and FFL transfer fees. It'd hafta be an awfully expensive pistol, to otherwise make it worthwhile.

Im not to certain on the Taurus (have only used the The Judge so I can't speak for the quality) but I find for carrying the subcompact Glocks are nice, the G30 or G36 Slim are two very nice subs and are comfortable to carry. I currently use the G33 .357 SIG 10+1 mags with the Pearce pinky extension. You can find the Glocks pretty cheap, maybe not as inexpensive as the Taurus..

Armscor 1911s (such as the Rock Island Armory, Metro Arms, Charles Daly, etc) are getting very good reviews nowadays. having said that, i'd still pay an extra few bucks for a higher quality one. most of those Philipino guns are going to come equipped with GI sights and no beavertail grip safety. for about the same price, you could get a Springfield GI or a Para GI Expert

i wouldn't overlook the Stoeger Couger though. that seems like a very well made weapon

Seconded. A good friend carries one, it's been a great tack driver and can be had sub $500.

Thanks. So many choices I thought I had it narrowed down to the Taurus. Seems like a lot of people like this gun.
I currently carry the Kel-Tek 380 and a SKYY 9mm CPX-1 (Anyone have experience with the SKYY?)

Buds priceing usually includes shipping and then add a $10FFL fee :D

Buds is a "cash" discount price listed -- add 3% for credit/debit cards. Most FFL transfers for normal people run $20-30 unless you "know someone". ;)

FWIW, I think $20 FFL is VERY reasonable! ... certainly not the most, around. :?

I prefer to have a bit more a "business relationship", with an FFL ... than I would with, let's say, the 18yr-old handin' me my lunch at McDonald's.

When I can, I have my FFL order what I want. When I'm gonna save more than $50, I have it shipped to my FFL, and gladly pay him $20, to call it in.

When I have a trade, I find I get a little extra consideration. When I'm lookin' to knock-down the price of something on the rack, I find I get a little extra consideration. When I need to ship a gun, I find I get nothing but help, and even a purdy good "Thank you" fer another $20, fer his trouble.

If yer not interested in any of them sorta things, I'd check Walmart ... 'er Fleet Farm. ;)

I have owned both. The PT145 was my off duty carry for two years. It is STILL my backup. I found that the width of the grip fit my hand better than the PT745.

Taurus gets a bad rap, but the current generation of their MilPro line is very good.

Jerry Helm at firing line sports does transfers for $10 and works out of his home off of 65 in Blaine. He is a great guy to deal with...
