send a PM to Thunderjohn here on the board. great guy to deal with, honest, fast no BS and he has beat just about everyone's price local or online when i've asked him to order me stuff special. can't say enough good things about dealing with him. he deals out of Savage.

i wouldn't overlook the Stoeger Couger though. that seems like a very well made weapon

You do realize the Armscor brands offer a variety of 1911 configurations, right?

Example - the RIA Tactical model (the pre 2011 version) includes a full length guide rod, extended beavertail, extended safety, commander style hammer, skeleton target trigger, Novak sights, flared magwell and surprisingly good overall fit and finish for about $450. Compare these with a Springfield armory GI for $500 which gets you a base model 1911 with GI sights and a standard grip safety versus the beavertail, gritty stock trigger, etc... The Para is almost the same as the Springfield though at least it has 3-dot sights installed... same price. Throw the $50 balance at the RIA and you can put on some nice Pachmyr grips and still have money for an 8 round Chip McCormick PowerMag.

You can pay more and get less with the options you mentioned or shop smart and get a better gun for the same money.

On the south side of town I'd make the rounds of Gunstop in Minnetonka, Frontiersman in St. Louis Park and John (Thunderjohn) down in Shakopee - don't know the name of his store off the top of my head. Bill's is also a GREAT resource since you can rent guns and really get a feel for what you're up against, possibly avoiding an expensive mistake blind buying a gun you don't like to shoot via an online dealer. I've order a fair number of guns online via local FFL transfers but have lately gotten out of the practice. I feel the value of "try before you buy" justifies the sometimes higher price you pay locally, particularly for something you may want to match up with a holster and carry.

add my vote for working with thunderjohn, he's a straight shooter, he's competitive with online pricing, and a good guy, besides.

Add in shipping and transfer fees to the online prices

OK I ordered a PT-145

Where do you guys go shooting here? Is there a decently priced and safe range? Or is a membership to a gun club more economical? I am still kind of new to the state. thanks
