Maybe a stupid question...

Postby Fshirley on Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:47 pm

Every handgun I own was used by someone else before I obtained it...(dad, grandad, or a previous owner) so....here is my question.

I just purchased a new, never fired Taurus Mil Pro 145...yeah for me...part way thru the 5th clip at the range today I had the fleeting thought of "should I have done something to this gun before bringing it here and shooting it?

So can someone with more knowledge than me help me just wanna make sure I didn't mess up...I assume after shooting a good cleaning is in order.

It's a good idea to clean them and lube them. First to look for tooling marks, burrs and defects. Second because some firearms come absolutely soaked in lube, which is okay but the smoke from it can get annoying. And some come bone dry.

I have never done anything but inspect firearms before the first time shooting them (usually same day as buying them).

I wouldn't worry about it.

Cool thanks.

Didn't get any smoking but it was lubed up pretty good...I did take a few minutes to give it an inspection. She will get a good cleaning tonight.

Taurus is known for shipping with a ton of gunk.

And here's a good Taurus owners' web site for you: http://www.taurusarmed.net

I guess I'm hard on my guns. I fire the first magazine fresh out of the case. If there are no hang ups I'll fire one more just to make sure. Then I'll break it down, clean and lube. Then enjoy it like normal.

When I bought my new PT1911 I took it home and cleaned it . When inspecting the parts I dicovered that the barrel just did not look good. Shipped it off and they replaced the barrel. I finally got to shoot my new gun for the first time a month and a half later. I learned with that gun to resist the temptation with any firearm new or used to run out and put lead down range.

I always take new guns down first. Many of them are packed full of storage grease and that grease is not meant to lubricate a firearm during shooting, but to keep rust from forming. Clean that junk out and lube it with real gun lube, then shoot.

I always tear them apart first. I'm a nerd and I want to see exactly how it works and how each part interacts with the other. I don't recommend this for most people but a quick clean and lube first is a good idea.

I always disassemble and clean any gun that's new to me before shooting it. It's partly to confirm no obvious mechanical problems, part ritual and mostly just because it's a habit formed early in my shooting days. A lot of new guns that have to cross an ocean to get here are treated with a metal preservative that should come off before firing, same for milsurp guns that likely come with a thick cosmoline treatment.

I think a lot of domestic gun makers (Springfield, Smith and Wesson, Colt, Ruger, etc..) realize people are not great about this and pre-lubricate the guns so they can be taken from the gun store to the range and fired.

I am with you here. Half of my enjoyment of guns is the mechanical aspect of the gun. Learning how all the parts interact and mesh together is great fun. It is like big kid legos. I even take some (depending on internals) down to each individual part after every time at the range for inspection and cleaning. Its overkill but enjoyable.

And yes, giving it a proper lube before shooting it is a good idea although I wouldn't worry about it if you didn't. It will be just fine in my non-expert opinion.

I just take em out and shoot em and have not had a problem yet. That mil. pro. 145 is my most carried gun it has a lot of holster wear now, I have five other Taurus all have been good, only the 709 did not extract WW white box well.

I have 24/7 pro 40 as well that I have carried since July and have had no problems with as well. I have now switched over to the 145 and really like how it sits and feels. I was also very happy with how it handled on the range.
