.22 revolver

Postby goett047 on Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:45 pm

I've decided my next toy will, in all likelihood be a .22 revolver. What do all of you think would give me the most bang for my buck? DA is a must. I already have a single six.

I kinda like the looks of the new SP101 .22.

The .22 LCR also has my attention.

I'd prefer a hammer.

Oops I missed the "bang for your buck" part. Nevermind me.

Held the Smith and Taurus side by side today. Almost bought the smith on the spot. I think I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for a good deal on one.

I've had a Taurus and the Ruger SP101. Thinking back I actually liked the Taurus better. I think the trigger and hammer spring on the Ruger was too heavy for my preference but both were good shooters.

Smith & Wesson revolvers might seem too expensive when you buy them, but after you've owned and used them for a while you will be reluctant to resell them for the price you paid or even more. I think the new Ruger double action revolvers, and their new semi automatic 22 pistol are also worth close looks.

It's also my opinion that you get more value back on a 22 lr handgun with the extra practice you will put in because there's no recoil to speak of, and 500 rd bulk packs of ammo are generally only about $20.00. Don't go cheap on a 22 lr handgun. Spend more for a quality handgun now, and enjoy owning it for many years to come.

From what I've gathered after lurking around the Ruger forums for awhile, I've found that most folks consider Ruger revolvers to be "oversprung" from the factory. Fortunately, Rugers seem to be fairly easy to work on for the average DIY home gunsmith and their triggers can be greatly improved by a little polishing/deburring and a Wolff spring kit.

There's an old codger at my gun range who will often show up with a bag full of 50+ year old Smith & Wesson wheelguns... that he bought brand new. They're all in minty condition, having been range toys and meticulously cared for by a single owner. He has a six shot .22LR Smith wheelgun and that thing is a beauty - it even has the firing pin right on the hammer.

.22 revolver

Last time I was in Capra's they had a 63. I think they had a 617 too. I'm sure they had a Taurus or two as well if you want to compare. Or if you really want a cool gun, they have a 351PD in the case.
