New Kimber Ultra Carry 2 break in?

Postby rhodalinsky on Mon Mar 05, 2012 7:31 am

So, it is my first 1911 and first Kimber. i was told there is a break in period. I shot 20 rounds on Sun and on Sun night i notices that the frame was getting rubbed just below where the bullets feed into the barrel. Is this normal? I have a pic below. just thrown a bit cause my Glock didn't have a mark on it after 100's of rounds.

This is pretty normal on the Kimbers -I've seen it on all of mine.

Had the same thing on mine, it's normal. Just keep her clean and oiled.

How do ya like it? I was skeptical that it was all hype but I haven't had a single issue and the firearm feels tight and fit, you can definitely tell the quality is there.

I like it but I am super anal and these are all new things that never happened on my Glock. I am fine as long as it is normal. Love the night sights and glad I bought it at the gunstop.

On aluminum framed 1911s, I would recommend running mags that use a plastic follower instead of a metal one. There have been many reports of followers tipping forward and contacting the frame when the last round is fed. This can cause some damage to the feed ramp of an aluminum framed gun.

I do think that this is more of a concern with non-ramped barrels. You have a ramped barrel. That makes most of the contact area steel. Still, you will need a few mags. Buy Wilson mags. Then you will know that the mag followers aren't causing any damage to your frame.

+2

Additionally Chip McCormick came out with the Power Mag+ that's supposed to be safe for aluminum framed pistols. I haven't tried them out yet, but the CMC mags are the only ones that have worked equally well for all my 1911's (I cannot say the same for Wilson..)
