They might have been an Epic Fail, but they now command a premium because they no longer make them.

I don't know a single person that has ever bought one, or even wanted one. To each their own, I guess. I'm honestly continually surprised by how so many people will pay large sums of money for trivial things once they realize that the item is discontinued.

Considering how desperate Glock is getting because of their rapidly declining sales numbers, I guess it makes sense for them to start expanding aesthetic options. It is a Glock, so they can only do so much.

Commercial sales could very well be increasing. However, LE sales are plummeting. I should have clarified, and that's my fault.
LE sales have long been a major source of attention, and revenue generation, for Glock. With LE sales dropping, Glock looks like it is shifting gears to a more commercial-based development. I know they have been upping their advertisement in the LE community at an exponential rate. EOTech is the same way- they are losing a significant number of military and LE contracts, so they are concentrating on commercial sales. Glock is no different.

Glock used to have a majority of the LE market share, with figures varying between 60-70%. In 2010, Glock claimed to own 65% of the LE market. Last figure I saw indicated an estimated drop down to a range of 45-55%. Many agencies are switching to M&Ps. Detroit, LAPD and LA Co Sheriff, etc etc. In May 2008, approximately 330 LE agencies nationwide were known to have adopted the M&P. By December of 2011, that number was between 800-900 agencies (exact figures unknown), and the number is growing rapidly. Recent FBI stats indicated that there were over 708,000 sworn officers in the United States and territories in 14,169 LE agencies. If Glock had 65% at that time, that's 460,000 Glocks across 9200 agencies. Best case scenario with 55% market ownership, that's 70,000 fewer officers spread across 1400 agencies that no longer carry Glock. The numbers continue to decline. Since the statistics are estimates, the actual numbers are not fully known since agencies can issue a weapon without the manufacturer knowing it.
Within the state of MN, the last estimate I saw was that Glock has lost ~6% of the overall LE market over the last year, and that number is expected to go over 10% by the end of this year.

Not technically a loss in previous sales, but a loss in market share does mean loss of future sales. Glock needs to make up for this, so they are gearing more towards the commercial market. Glock is who they are because of the LE community in the US. Being an armorer, I've gotten the distinct impression over the years that Glock has taken their market control for granted. Now it's biting them in the rear. In my talks with Glock LE reps, I know that they have placed a great deal of emphasis on the LE market, and it's a major part of their revenue. This is why I mention it. I cannot speak to the commercial side of sales.

Both of their plants, Austria & Smyrna are running at full capacity, 3 shifts, 5 days per week.

They are still 200K-300K pistols behind. That means they have sold 200 to 300 thousand more pistols than they can make. Sure, they have lost some US LE market share, but they are far from declining.

Distributor exclusive firearms like this are designed and ordered by the distributor (in this case Lipsey's) to their own specifications. It isn't a marketing decision by Glock - as pointed out, they can't keep up as it is and for the time being they don't need to attract buyers.
