Looking to get a revolver

Postby Rand McNally on Mon May 14, 2012 1:52 pm

I'm looking to get my first revolver (not my first handgun). Never had one, always wanted one. I'll never carry it, but would like to have one to shoot on occasion. Would be shot by various people (men, women, tall, short, big, small, etc.). Not looking for something like a Bodyguard or LCR. Any suggestions?

Ruger GP100.

I have many SW's but I still like my Ruger GP100. Either would be fine.

+1

I love my 4" stainless GP100. Built like a tank, pretty nice trigger (double-action isn't as nice as a comparable S&W though). Accurate. Women love shooting it with .38's.

Another vote for the GP100, particularly the one with the 6" barrel. Load it mild with.38 Special rounds that even your athritic 78 year old grandmother can handle with the greatest of ease, or go hog wild with the stoutest .357 Mag. hunting loads that will appease the closet recoil junkie in your Harley-riding brother-in-law.

It's a gun your entire family can enjoy!

Pre-Lock Smith and Wesson K or L frame in .357 mag.

K Frames are the most elegant revolvers in the world, with a grip size that fits all shooters and outstanding balance. Some early Ks got battered by folks shooting new fangled 125 gr hot ammo. If you stick to 158 gr ammo, the K will last a lifetime.

The L frame corrected this issue by beefing up the frame and adding a full underlug while keeping the grip size the same. Pretty guns, but balance suffered.

If you think you'll never want to shoot .357 (you'll probably be wrong  ), you can snag a nicer model 15 (4" barrel) or 14 (6" barrel") in .38 special. The Model 19 (.357mag in 4" or 6") is a beautiful gun.

I love the look and feel of the 625, but I am looking for something in .38/.357.

So far I like the looks of the SP101 in 4". The GP100 looks huge. I will have to make a stop this week and put some in my hands. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

My vote:

Ruger GP100 6" Heavy 357Mag

You already stated not for carry.
You stated all types of people will shoot it, its weight will reduce felt-recoil, along with being able to shoot light-loaded 38Specials also. Longer barrel will assist with longer sight-radius for better accuracy.

And I'm biased - as I own two - 1 blued, 1 stainless.

Smith 686+ 7shot 357 in 4 or 6 inch variety
OR
Ruger GP100 in 4 or 6 inch variety.
can't go wrong with either of those two options. stop in at Bills in Robbinsdale, there's both on the range (4 inchers)

oh, and Smith has brought back the 586, too! that's one sharp lookin' gun :D

S&W 686+ 6"
Had one that I sold along with several others when the small person was born. It's the only one that I want to replace with the exact same model.

My thought would be a Ruger security six .357/38. These can easily be picked up for ~ $400 and are rock solid. In the last few months I've grabbed a 6" and 4" security six as well as a 2.75" speed six, every one is a joy to shoot.
A few 1911's, two crazy boxers, a fast car and a half fast driver.
