I shot that one a few times as a condition of making him a holster for the gun. I don't think he much liked the holster but I really enjoyed shooting that gun. B O O M ... FLAME! The story Joel had along with that gun was that it was a backup gun for some SWAT / Fugitive Task force officer. IDK the veracity of that but it sure made a good story.

Revolvers in 44 Mag, looking for an education

I toured S&W a couple years ago and the tour guide told us that the 44 Mag that Clint shot was actually a 41. But it looked exactly the same. Interesting.

With the possible exception of a 5.5in Blackhawk (depending on someone else's skill/comfort), I can think of no better pistol for that purpose. Image

Start practicing now! ... keep practicing at least once/month ... 'til September/October ... then more like once/week. Don't try any shots past what ya liked what ya saw on-target at the range! ;)

I read somewhere it was chambered in 45LC because the studio had a warehouse full of blanks for that cartridge left over from the old cowboy movies.

Is that both pistols at once ... 'er one at a time? :| GF

From the design of the lockwork, using two hands, I'd give the edge to the SAA.

But I'd say length of the bbl, mass of the gun, and the load yer shootin', has a lot more to do with how fast ya can shoot a revolver ... and still hit what you're aimin' at.

For a field-pistol, presuming a heavier caliber, there's also the likelihood of flinching.

This is where the SAA's a double-edged sword. It's designed to have a little muzzle-flip to soak up some recoil ... at which, I think it's among the most comfortable to shoot ... and least likely to flinch. But, for flat out speed, it'd also be slower back on target ... by like a couple hunderdths of a second ... all else bein' equal (bbl length, mass, load).

I 'spose, if ya thought ya'd never get an accurate shot off ... 'til ya gotta jam the gun into the critter's jaw ... I might prefer a DA. Whilst guideing I carried a SRH as I was more likely to shoot off hand as any other way while going thru brush

Past that, oz. fer oz., and half the price to boot, I'd take a 4 5/8in Blackhawk over a 3in Alaskan, any day! ... if not a 3 3/4in Vaquero!
Blackhawk in 45 Colt and handloads although I still want a Alaskan just dont want to pay the price.
