M&P Kool-Aid Is Strong

Postby Thunder71 on Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:09 pm

Well a special thanks goes to Springfield for having a big FAIL on the release of the XD-S, forcing me into getting the M&P Shield to hold me over.

Needless to say I've been very impressed with the Shield in 9mm, a very well thought out design that got me curious what else they offered. This led me to the M&P 9mm Compact which arrived today at my FFL. Although I only had time to give it a quick cleaning and run just over 50 rounds through it before picking my kids up, I could feel the same attention to detail I noticed in my Shield in this gun and knew right away why the Shield's roots made it so popular, so quickly.

Couple minor nitpicks:
The Shield doesn't have an ambi-safety.
So far I've been unable to work the ambi slide release with my left hand on the Compact.

I have no doubt the XD-S is all it was supposed to be, I'm sure it's an excellent release by Springfield and will be wildly popular. I enjoy my XDM a lot, but there's just something about the M&P series that really hit me.

Nice gun man, I'm also interested in getting my hands on a shield.

The safety on the Shield really isn't necessary and will probably cause you
a big problem in a high stress situation.
And the slide release lever is really a slide lock lever, so just use it to
lock the slide back and release the slide with your off hand.
Both very nice guns.

Thanks!

Yeah, I guess I'm so used to using the slide lock lever to release the slide on my Kahr's that it's going to take a while to get used to being able to slingshot again. :D

And yes, I know safeties aren't for everyone - but I like them and train with them on.

I've been wondering how the Shield compares to the Kahr PM9 and CM9?

I've owned the PM9 and MK9:
It's larger, but for me I haven't noticed a difference in carry ability/comfort. In fact the Shield, for me anyway, is more comfortable to carry and I think it has something to do with the grip and angles being less harsh.

The Shield has found its way onto my hip almost exclusively at this point. With that being said, the main issue that this weapon has in my mind is not the existence of a safety, but the ease with which the magazine can be released. I use a Galco SOB holster moved forward so that the belt loop on my 4 o'clock is in-between the loops on the holster itself. I have noticed on more than one occasion the mag release button has been pressed inadvertently which would cause some serious issues if I was drawing my weapon to use it. That is my only complaint with the Shield. I have heard that Kydex is the way to go in remedying the situation but I am not really sure to the legitimacy of that particular solution.

Oh yeah, congrats on your purchase.

Are they basically the same size? They look like they are really really close in those pics.

They are close, the Shield is quite a bit thinner and shorter however.

9C = 12+1
Shield = 7+1

The Shield is about the same size as the Kahr CW9, so larger than the PM9/CM9 in height, length and weight.

I've heard the m&p's have had similar problems. A stiffer mag release spring is what was used to fix those i do believe.

I'm liking the new M&P line, shot a buddies a couple weeks ago and that when I decided to sell/trade my Glock for one. Cant wait to get my hands on one of my own... just have to ditch this Glock 22 first.
