Budget Pistol

Hello gentlemen and ladies. This next month I turn 21 and have already gotten my Permit to Purchase. On the special day I want to pick up a handgun more as a range toy and fun gun than anything else. With that in mind I don't have a very large budget ($250)+ or - some, what is your opinion on what I should get? I have handled a few Makarov's and think that it would work pretty well and ammo is available at most gun shops, but want your opinion.

I bought my Ruger Mark III 2245 from Bill's in Robinsdale for $269.00. You really can't go wrong with a .22LR. Just be mindful of your technique so you don't develop bad habits.

Maks are great pistols, but both of the rugers mentioned would be good options too.

For a range pistol I bought a HiPoint JCP .40 s&w. Not the cheapest ammo but good range gun, I have 1400 rounds down range with few problems. You can find the C9 9mm for under $150 online. My friend has 1000 rounds through his with zero failures.

cheap, ammo is everywhere, used mags are around and not too expensive, good for fun on the range and still would be ok for the glove box or nightstand.

solid all around choice.

or, as mentioned, a cheap 22 plinker. ammo is DIRT cheap, can spend all day ont he range for under $10. not good in teh glove box or nightstand thorugh.

If money's that tight, I'd say definitely 9mm ... if not .22!

Fer $250ish, yer best bet's used! ... still not much, in that price range! ... $350 - $400 would really open up some nice options!

Otherwise, for $250ish, I'd look at the old S&W model 10's that're around! ... .38spl's a bit more than 9mm ... but if ya can swing 'nother $50, ya can get a little press 'n set of dies and reload fer the cost of cast .38 bullets!

As has been said, Ruger P89 ... maybe a used Kahr CW9? ... maybe an old S&W 5906, 'er such?! ... I don't think ya could get a P225 fer that little? ... then there's the S&W Sigma, 'er such?!

Keep yer eyes peeled on this board ... if ya see somethin' ya like, offer what ya can! ... Christmas is 'round the corner ... bound to be a couple goodies, comin' up! ... worst they can say is "no"!

These pistols are absolute tanks. my dad bought a p85 new, got the update done to it by Ruger in 1990, and it has gone bang every time for over 20 years and he shoots around 500-1k rounds a year out of it.

I have had a couple ruger pistols. No issues. They run good. I would say opt for a 9mm. IF you want to use the gun for carrying then it is more versatile. Pistols are a long slippery slope. You think you're going to buy just one inexspensive one for fun and then the next thing you know you have a few of them!!!! I loved my LC9. Purdy cheap too. I think I saw one on here for $280. High points are a good fun gun but I wouldn't trust my life with it..

The SAR B6 pistols distributed by EAA are really nice for the money if you want new. I have sold a bunch of them and had really good feedback, basically a poly framed CZ 75 clone. They are on sale on Gallery of Guns this month. Used, Ruger P-series are hard to beat, although the prices have been coming up on them since the metal framed models were discontinued.

the ruger is a well built gun priced right for the condition. if you have a chance to check out a cz 82 they shoot the 9x18 round. it a very well built gun for what they sell for also makes a good carry gun.

My first handgun was a S&W Sigma 9mm. $299.99 and comes with two 16 round magazines. The newer SD 9mm can be had for about $25-35 more. Also the Ruger P95 new should run around $300. Don't forget to check the used market... I scored two of my XD pistols used for reasonable amounts... XD9 Subcompact for $250 (after using up a $100 store credit I had), and a XD45 Compact used for only $200! But I had to do some major talking back and forth on that one...
