As cool as it sounds to carry an AK, it's pretty powerful. You would have to worry a lot about over penetration and you'd just end up shooting someone through something who you didn't mean to shoot.

The majority of shots fired in self defense miss, you are more likely to hit someone that way...

If you wanted to use that 7.62x39 for SD, I would look at something like this:

Dear Elsie9: While you have already found out that you COULD legally do this, that is a LOOONNNNG way from the actual reality of doing it.

From another thread, we have the following:

Re: Legality of Owning a Semi-Auto Assault Weapon in Minneapolis

I've seen that... I guess that I'm more concerned with what the police department believes. I called my precinct in Minneapolis, and they told me that it was not legal. I just would prefer not to get arrested, even if I am "correct" under State law.

In REALITY, then, it's more than likely that you'll wind up in custody with your AK pistol confiscated in Minneapolis, regardless of what the law says, because that's the way things are in REAL LIFE, as opposed to some theoretical discussion in here.
Just as an FYI, the last guy to deliberately challenge the interpretation of the gun laws in Minneapolis wound up charged with a felony, and his bail was $100,000, which was more than he could afford to pay without help from others. That's the reality of what actually happened in a test case, so don't go getting any ideas that you can walk around with an AK pistol visible without getting swept up and charged in real life, no matter how much the law may be on your side, or because somebody in here told you so.

And secondly, regarding your statement:

Thanks guys. I carry a Kahr CM9, but I know if some s*** broke out, wouldn't it be great to be carrying that AK pistola!?

The answer is NO, it would be totally UNgreat to have a weapon like that if some REAL **** broke out!! Your fantasizing about this is kind of an indication of how disconnected you are from the reality of that actual situation, which is a real red flag. Have you ever shot an AK pistol?? The muzzle flash is hideous, the noise will deafen you on the first shot, the recoil is going to be ugly, and your chances for an accurate 2nd shot are going to be nearly non-existent! That of course brings up the fact that the first round may go right through somebody and hit something else, and any subsequent rounds are going to be flying free and go for a long ways and/or penetrate walls with no problem, so the possibility of hitting an innocent bystander are about as large as they could possibly be for any "pistol" in existence.

So, from my viewpoint, you're a newcomer with 32 posts who is thinking about carrying an AK pistol for self defense, and thinks it would be really great to have such a weapon if some **** broke out. Yes, you can deny that you'd actually never do that, but visualizing something is the first step towards actually doing it, so you've already admitted that you like fantasizing about it. What you actually need to be doing is visualizing how well placed shots from your Kahr CM9 are going to save your life someday, and keep practicing with a gun like that which actually IS a viable option for personal self defense. Get out of that fantasy world of yours and smell the coffee before you wind up getting busted and/or killing somebody, and don't forget that expecting things to turn out according to the letter of the law is JUST as big a fantasy as actually thinking how cool it would be to have an AK "pistola" in case some **** broke out.

That's the truth. I got "lectured" by a cop once because my wife was oc. Dimwit told me he could arrest her if he wanted to, but was being nice since both of us (his family and mine) were out in a public place and he wasn't on duty. That event was actually how I got to know the guys over on Joel's old board.
