So I just got my TRP, what should I swap out?

Postby FuBruB on Sun Dec 30, 2012 10:23 am

Any suggestions on what parts, Guide rod or MIM parts I should just toss out now on my TRP? I know its functional and will probably be just fine "as-is" but...

I was gonna buy every Bulletproof part from Wilson I could get, but I thought I better check around first on opinions. I see complaints about a few internals being a little undersized, or could be better, etc...

So, what would you do? How has your TRP ran and what do you wish you could swap, or did swap?

Thanks.

For now all I have is a set of VZ grips and some 47D's.

Mine ran perfectly. I didn't swap out any parts. Some have argued that swapping out the guide rod for a full length one is the way to go - but I didn't do that...

I did check the sights and wound up putting some loctite on both the front and rear sights to ensure they didn't come loose. I had an issue with the front sight pin working itself loose - and then the rear sight drifting a bit. Once I loctite'd them - they've been fine.

It's a great pistol. Good luck!

Do you have the adjustable rear or fixed combat sights?

What do u plan on using it for?

Most stock SA triggers could use some love IMHO.

I'd say nothing should need to be swapped. It is a TRP for crying out loud.

This... :D

I have the TRP with the Adj. rears but I have carried a 1911 in the past with adj. sights. This is one of my carry/HD weapons.

Well just cause it's a TRP doesn't mean the internals shouldn't be replaced. Most are MIM parts, hence the questions...

The reason I ask is because if you were looking to compete in bullseye, vs USPSA, vs IDPA the rules can be different and you can be looking for improvements in different areas.

If you want to mess with the trigger and replace the MIM parts with good quality stuff I would start with one of the Cylinder and Slide fire control groups, they have a couple different ones that are focused at carry/tactical/reliability as opposed to some of there kits that are focused at providing a super light target trigger.

I hear ya there, no competition shooting with my 1911's. I just don't have the time.

I'm not sure I'd replace the fire controls except for maybe a good polish.

I was thinking extractor, firing pin, guide rod, springs, etc.

Maybe I'll just be happy with what I got, and don't fix what ain't broke...

Messing with any of those except the guide rod can easily turn you TRP an unreliable POS. I do prefer a military guide rod and it is one of the few parts you can swap with no training or fitting.

I also wouldn't recommend "polishing" any of your trigger parts. The tolerances in a good 1911 are tight, you stone surfaces rather than polishing them.

I have seen stock TRPs and SF Loaded models go 10's of thousands of rounds without any part failures, you are probably good to go on all the major components.

I say save the money for ammo and shoot the hell out of it!

Well I just bought a 10-8 sight to replace the adjustable sights, and I agree that I think I'll just leave the rest be for now.

If anything I'll send it to SA for some custom work down the road.

Thanks for keeping me on track guys!

TRPs are great pistols. Buy as many mags and ammo as you can find and go shoot!
