Buds has been charging MSRP. Gallery of Guns was 414 total. That's gun, tax, shipping and transfer. Both sites sell out extremely fast when they do get any in stock so checking multiple times a day is a must. Or you can go the easy route and pay the extra money people on gunbroker are charging for the convenience of not having to stalk local gun shops and online retailers for the next 6 months.

I am going to consider trying to purchase online...however I have never purchased a gun online before so does anyone have any advice for someone making a first time purchase online? What do I all need before making the purchase? Does anyone recommend any FFL in Burnsville area?

I don't have one to recommend, but find an FFL first who will agree to the transfer. Know what their fee will be in advance.

Have them send a copy of the FFL to the place you are purchasing the gun online from. If they'll give you a copy to send yourself, so much the better since you may not yet know which dealer you are going with.

When I use gunbroker, I set some rules on from whom I will buy. After doing the search for the gun I want and narrowing down the search results to only show the guns themselves instead of the related parts too, I then just go down the list and see what's a possible good and safe deal. Once you log into the site, you can click on the little button next to the items that lets you follow individual auctions. Typically, I end up dumping over 3/4 of the search results in my first pass through them because the sellers are way too high in their starting or buy it now prices, they charge too high of shipping, and/or they are demanding the credit card fee on top of the sale price. I usually end up with two or three potential items to bid on, and those are the ones with decent opening prices, great descriptions with photos of at least each side of the gun if it's used so I can see the seller is freely showing what's for sale, shipping in the $15 to $20 range, no credit card fees (or if there are fees, the ability to pay via bank money order or cashiers check), and finally and most importantly, high positive seller ratings. I click to "follow" these particular items, and then check back to gunbroker in the days leading up to the final auction sale to see how they are progressing. I also check gunbroker for new postings in the days following as new items get posted by other sellers that I may want to add to my following list. I never bid on an item until there is only an hour or less left of its sale, as I see no point in running up the bid myself.

The point about seller ratings being both multiple and positive is the most important in my mind. I will never buy from some seller that has only a few recorded sales ratings. Everybody has to start somewhere, but those newbie individual sellers are too much of a wild card for me. I prefer to buy from those dealers or pawn shops on gunbroker that use gunbroker simply as another store front. The dealers with experience know how important their postive ratings are, so they almost always communicate well with the final buyer, and they ship in a timely manner.

Bottom line is that it's like everything else in life. Be patient and do your homework. If the deal sounds too good to be true, or the seller won't respond to reasonable questions about the item for sale, walk away. There's other guns to buy.

Good luck.

One more thing. I agree with the above statement about having your FFL lined up in advance. I use a guy in the north metro (Gerry Helm) that charged $10 per transfer. Hard to beat that price. Once I've won an item on gunbroker, I simply email Gerry and ask that he email a copy of his FFL to my seller. Gerry is fabulously responsive and often sends his FFL to my seller before my money arrives at the seller. I usually email the seller immediatley upon the auction being over, asking for confirmation on the final price (sales price plus shipping), so I can the same day drop the money order in the mail or communicate to pay by credit card. The sellers I've dealt with seem to very much appreciate that their buyer has initiated the process and moved payment and FFL forward quickly. I often have the new gun in my hands within the week from end of auction.

Smith and Wesson Shield Availability???

Postby adoptedson on Tue Jan 08, 2013 9:23 am

Buds has a list of local FFL's that have approved receiving guns from them without notice. Just use their FFL search on their site to find one close and reasonably priced. I haven't ordered from them but it seems it would be one of the easiest/hassle free places to order from online. And I'd still recommend alerting the FFL you choose that you have something inbound.

Not sayin the shield is not a good gun... But what is the hype with these things? Can someone explain this to me? Its like the shield is the new 1911 or something... I would not mind owning one at all. Just curious.
