First 1911!

Postby grousemaster on Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:35 pm

Today I picked up a used Colt M1991A1 series 80. Is this a good one? I'm an idiot when it comes to 1911's (and maybe a couple other things).....it was $650 used with box and 3 colt mags. Came with original grips and another set. Did I get a good deal? I know I can customize to my hearts content, anything on this model people tend to change right away?

I was gonna get a Remington or Ruger, but figured an older Colt for about the same price couldn't be such a bad thing....maybe I was wrong...

Nice catch - I am picking up my new Springer 1911 Range Officer tonight from ThunderJohn. I too have tasted of the kool-aid and found myself wanting one!
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

70-Series ... the older ones ... are of the more collectible variety!

I never did get a straight answer on 1991 vs. 1911 ... 'sposedly, where it matters, they're both mil-spec (interchangeable parts) ... definitely more of a "budget" pistol (sorry. :? )

80-Series indicates it has a firing-pin block safety! ... not necessarily anything to get upset about ... most every semi-auto made since the 80's, has got the same thing ... only notable exceptions bein', 1911's currently manufactured, without such a thing (i.e. Ruger, Rock Island, Springfield, some Colts, S&W "E Series"). 'Sposedly, it can affect the trigger-pull?! ... frankly, IMO, a ****ty sear/spring/hammer is far worse! ... and lotsa folks live with that! If ya ever detail-strip it, it's a couple more parts fallin' out ... that've gotta go back in! ... again, not a big deal ... 'less ya got poor eyesight and giant sausage fingers!

Really? a 70-series is a collectible? I bought my 70 series new in '78 and have a few drop-in improvements made to it. I don't carry it anymore but still love to shoot it. It was my duty weapon for a few years back then when all my partners were carrying S&W Model 10s.

If it's a collectible, then that means that I'm, <gasp!>, old!

Glad to hear it! I decided to take down the pistol and clean it....thought I could figure it out easy. Ended up watching a youtube video on reassembly

If you pm me your email, I will send you a really nice step by step word document on field and detail stripping.

I put a trigger in my SACS Pro today. I made her black. I still hope to get a single safety, flush cut and crown the barrel and get a black bushing.

I'm gonna have to add some pics of the new pistol tomorrow..... definitely in order. As far as I know my pistol is stock. I really like the trigger though. I know I m used to Glocks, etc... which is why any single action rigger feels nice...but I don't know I need to uograde, it's already a huge step up for me. Would a full length guide rod be a good expenditure? How about some new sights? This one doesn't even have dots...just basic metal sights. Picked up a box of Blazer at Fleet Farm and can't wait to try it this weekend between rifle exercises :D

and...uh...how do you take down the mags? :D

Sights are a good investment. FLGR a marketing solution in search of a non existent problem. Mag takedown depends on type of mag. If it has removable baseplate, remove it and pul stuff out bottom. If not, use a pencil (eraser down) to depress the follower, stick a nail through a witness hole to trap the spring in compressed position, remove the pencil, shake out the follower, remove the nail, and you are done.

This is what I did with my 1991 Colt. Did the whole thing myself other than the sights.
