Pistol for competetive shooting?

So I've joined the BPR League, and have been shooting a Beretta 92fs; I'm really comfortable with my 92, but i'm wondering if i should move to a striker-fired firearm.

I see a couple pros here, here, as I'd no longer have to start my first shot in double action; and either a glock or an M&P would remove the safety hardware from my grip, etc. In addition, i'd like your thoughts on moving to a .40 or .45 load as it would put me into the major power factor and therefore gain more points on non-alpha hits.

On the other hand, I'd be learning a whole new platform, and putting a bunch of money into a new firearm. Plus, cause of use is higher with non-9mm ammunition. Furthermore, in theory if I'm hitting all alpha zones, power-factor doesn't matter, I'm not gaining anything if I'm accurate in the first place.

So, fellow competitive shooters, share your thoughts; is moving to a striker fired/major power factor gun worth the money/time, and how do you feel about shooting the same gun as everyone else? (the majority of shooters at our first league night were using glocks.)

There is a reason you see the guns you do at competitions, they are reliable, accurate and the shooter feels the platform is giving them a competitive edge. Find whats in your price range and you shoot well.

If your shooting production there is no advantage to using a caliber other them 9mm. Otherwise .40 for major power factor and more rounds in the mag.

... it's been a few years ... but, FWIW, (now, and maybe then) GrandMaster Ben Stoeger showed up to OGC shootin' a Beretta 92 ... no clue if that's his gat, of choice ... at the very least, I'd guess he figures it's "ok"!

I shot a Sig last summer ... I did "ok"!

... bear in mind, most of the guys with the striker-fired guns have ... 1. replaced triggers/springs/whatever ... 2. had a 'smith slick it up ... 3. slicked it up, theyselves ... I'd suggest, if there's somethin' in particular with yer 92 that's bothering ya, maybe see if ya can find a reputable 92 'smith, and see what's what?!

I had a 92fs, and i was able to give it a great trigger pull. Its a solid gun for production competition, and stoeger (current gm and prod nat champ) shoots an elite, which is similar.

DA trigger pull is fine to have, it takes some practice, but many shooters (including me) use a SA/DA for prod.

I would keep it if it works for you, and practice with it. You might find its fine, you might also find you want something different, but it takes some experience to know for sure.

Its not like you are shooting a hi point or a sig.

Ben S. weapon of choice. very cool 92 version. they dont make em like that anymore. hard to find kinda too.

Burnsville is the only place that scores a Major/minor in production. If you continue shooting competitively 9mm is your best bet. Get a glock 34....

Elite II (2001–2006) This option replaced the Elite I option in 2001 and includes the same features as the original Elite plus removable Novak type sights, extended magazine release catch, checkered front/rear grip strap, thicker (than Elite I) skeletonized hammer, and lighter D-spring. This option is available only with the stainless G-Model slide, also with front serrations. The stainless barrel for the Elite II has a target crown.

Outta all that, I'd take the checkering! ... well, and the removable sights! (didn't realize that weren't an option on the regular 92)

Only other issue'd be the trigger-reset ... Sig really turned things around with their SRT! ... I had a 92 once ... but I don't recall what the reset was like.

Anyone know ... are the late model 92's like the Sig SRT's? ... better? ... worse?

Other than that, biggest complaint I've ever heard 'bout a 92 was the grip-size?!

Otherwise, custom trigger-work not withstanding, I'd say CZ 75/SP-01, Sig P226, and Beretta 92 are all very comparable! ... and I've seen a couple guys shoot the CZ's, extremely well ... IIRC, Ron's boy made Master with one! ... in like 4 months! :shock:

Ahh, see i have big hands, to the wide grip on the 92 fits my hand well; which i like. Well, you've convinced me to stick to the 92 for this season. I might go to a different platform next season.

If you have big mudhooks, and you are thinking of changing from the 92, think about a Witness. It's like a CZ but with a larger frame.
