My first Walther

Postby Flyby on Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:59 pm

I had been looking for a new 40 cal since I cleaned out and reorganized my ammo drawer and noticed all of the 40 ammo I had left despite selling my only 40 cal pistol I had about a year ago. After watching some James Bond movies I got Into researching Walthers and got it narrowed down that I either wanted a P99/as or the PPQ. Gander in Mankato didn't have anything, Scheels had a used P99 that was DAO. I decided to drive to Cabelas in Owatona on Monday after class in the blowing snow feeling confident but they had nothing as well. Just for the hell of it I stopped in the Fleet Farm there for the first time and they had this gun for $549. I haven't shot it yet, which I plan to do this weekend, but what I can say is that the trigger pull and the reset puts my Glocks to shame.

I bought a PPQ in 9mm to replace my malfunctioning Glock 19. Finally fixed the Glock but I like the PPQ so much that Glock now resides in the back of the safe. Really stellar pistol. Mags are tough these days. Fleet Farm had a bunch of PPQ mags, I've also been able to score a few MR Eagle mags, which are the same magazine at about 1/2 the price. I'm not sure what's going to happen as the PPQ M2 becomes the only PPQ model. Current PPQ mags are the same as the P99...I'm hoping that means there won't be a problem with replacements.

I did replace the stock plastic sights with Dawson Precision - like 'em a lot.

The trigger reset on the PPQs are awesome and unmatched! It takes a few rounds to get used to the scant 1/10th inch but once you get it down there's just no comparison. The grip and balance of the gun are also excellent. Enjoy!

Your going to love it.

Of the 3 9's I have, PPQ, G17, and an XD9. The PPQ is by far my favorite.

Read what Larry Vickers has to say about them on M4C.

I love my PPQ, but I upgraded from a P85 MKII, so just about anything is better.

I also have the PPS and it is definitely not the same trigger as the PPQ.

I took it out yesterday and ran 100 rounds. Vickers review on it was spot on. Function and reliability was 100% which included about 10 rounds of HPs. Recoil was a bit more snappy than what i was expecting but with the great grip it has you can get a very solid hold. Accuracy was excellent thanks in large to the trigger. I see this gun in direct competition with the glock 23-19 (striker fire, similar price, same size) and the trigger alone puts it on top. What surprises me is that this gun isnt more popular than it is and more people arent talking about it.

It's actually very popular, but supplies have been very constrained. Its spike in popularity coincided with Walther's decision to shed S&W as their importer and warranty facility as of January 1, 2013 (they're doing that themselves now) as well as a change in design from the paddle magazine release to the button release (PPQ M2, which is hitting retail channels right about now). One could also argue that well-publicized issues with some 9mm Glocks and some M&P's has also spike interest, not to mention gushing enthusiasm from some high-profile guys like Larry Vickers.
