Well, a P220, even the smallest one, is pretty darn big. Much bigger than the small 1911s. And, it doesn't have a manual safety.

Because of the thinness of the frame and slide, I guess I'd recommend one of the short-frame, short-slide 1911s.

(Although, I should say that on the rare occasions I carry, it's a subcompact Glock in my jacket pocket, and it fits really nicely without being obvious.)

Has anybody noticed that this forum has begun to stray away from gun stuff?

Anyway, here's the new baby I'm looking at. A lot of .45 ACP love, coming at you:

Thats small! Have you shot it? Can you hold on to a .45 that small?!? I'm trying to convince my wife that a 1911 would be a good purchase even though we're starting our oldest in private school this fall. Yeah, good luck to me, huh?

Get permission from the principal to carry on school property..........

I haven't shot this particular gun (yet), put a 3" Kimber Ultra is very controllable.

Am sorta/kinda leaning towards one of the compact Sig 220's, but they look kinda bulky. Beretta is importing a mini Cougar in .45 ACP from Italy, but it isn't even listed in their US catalog. How's that for corporate commitment?

There's nothing wrong with any of the Kimber Ultra models, or the STI Escort for that matter, but I don't like the idea of C&L carry in the pocket.

So whatcha all think?

Hi Pat,
I know you said "Caliber has to be .45 ACP", but I gotta say I'm lovin' the .40 cal Beretta I bought from you a while back ;)

Thanks, Mike! I'm glad you like it. I just wish they made the same model in .45 ACP...

If that's anything like the 92 series, keep in mind that the "safety" isn't really a safety. It's a de-cocker. This means you're pretty much limited to a double-action first shot if you use it as a safety.

I've got a buddy who is well into the development of a brand spanking new .45 ACP. Am going to wait a bit, as he is a truly gifted dude...

the Kahr series are fine pistols, no external safety other than the head attached to the hand holding it though. I used a Bersa Thunder in 45acp until quiet recently, nice gun, fits well in a larger pocket some suit pants were problematical though. For it, it's light, slim, actually holdable in my larger sized hands, carries a proper round (capable of +p ammo also), and holds a normal load in the mag. It has an external as well as two internal safeties, the trigger is pretty nice, far from anything 1911 but acceptable for an SOS gun, bestly, it is rather inexpensive. Just my two cents here but it seems to fulfill your requirements well.
