Luger ID

Postby hard h2o on Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:25 am

Is there anyone here with some knowledge of German Lugers?

A friend has one he is curious about. He is not a gun guy.

I believe the magazine is newer than the pistol.

It has a date of 1938 on it along with the number 5416 in a couple of spots with 16 marked on many of the parts.

Beneath the barrel it is stamped 8,81.

I am unsure on the length of the barrel.

The stocks are checkered on the entire surface of both.

The rear sight is of the fixed variety.

If you could post some pics, I could probably get you some info. The 8,81 is the bore diameter (9mm). The 16 is the last two digits of the serial number, all numbered parts should have that to be considered a "matching" gun. Should also have lots of acceptance stamps on it. The original magazine would have been numbered to the gun.
