Holster questions

Postby Tubguy on Fri Apr 05, 2013 9:45 pm

I realize that there is no best holster. That being said I'm looking for a holster for a Beretta 92 FS. Over the belt. I'm going to carry on the right side. I'm trying not to buy several holsters to end up with the right one. So what are the things I should look for or stay away from when selecting a holster. I don't have a budget for this. Just looking for a good starting point!
Thanks
Mike

I carry two ways: IWB at appendix (most of the time) and OWB at 3:30 to 4:00 o'clock (sometimes). Both of my holsters are from Srigs, who used to post here. He still might, but I haven't noticed him in a while. His website is: http://sideguardholsters.com/Contact.htm

Things to look for:
Comfort. Only you can tell what is and is not comfortable. Try several models when you get a chance and see which feels ok.

Quality. Soft leather or suede, IMHO, suck. Don't expect to get a functional rig on the cheap. There are some things in life that just can't be had without spending money. Interior house paint, tools and holsters are among those things.

Gun fit. "Pretty close" is not good enough. A gun should fit PERFECT in a holster. The two holsters I got from Eric (Erik?) were made specifically for the gun I carry. I have several rigs that sit in a box under another box somewhere in the basement that said on the packaging that they would work for a list of guns. Yeah, not so much.

Stability. Your gun/holster should be in the same place all the time. For example, I've gained a little weight in the last few months so I'm not carrying at appendix right now (the holster pushes out and the angle changes cuz my gut is a little bigger than it will be in June).

Belt. The belt you need to hold a holstered gun in place IS NOT at Target or K-mart. You're gonna want something with more strength and rigidity than you might be used to wearing. Get used to it.

Speaking of belts, where can I guy buy these good gunbelts? I have been carrying for 5 years and just use my Target quality belts. I have no issues carrying kidney or 3 o'clock but figure I might as well look to upgrade. Probably want someplace I can try them on rather than just order online.
Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's my policy.

Bensdad pretty much hit the nail on the head. I love simply rugged holsters for all my guns and as far as carry belts, a galco, cabelas has some good options or sideguard I believe makes them as well and so does simply rugged.

Regarding belts, from another thread:

+1 on the Looper belt and Unholstered.com. Plus, Ron apparently sprints to the post office within seconds of receiving your order.

Mine's a year and a half old now and I like it a lot.

I got my custom belt from thebeltman.net and my custom holster from highnoonholsters.com and for about $250, I have the perfect holster for my XDm and a great belt to hang it on.

Works well for me. YMMV.

After trying a few brands I chose Comp-Tac. Their Minotaur IWB holsters are comfortable and durable with a double layer leather back and kydex shell. The double layer keep the attaching hardware away from the skin

I also like their belts because they are kydex reinforced and don't sag.

I like these as opposed to the typical 1" hole spaceing of leather belts for me it always seemed one hole is to tight and the next to loose with the Wilderness I could adjust it just right.
