1911 Familiarity

Postby Special Projects on Thu Apr 25, 2013 11:43 am

I've mostly been a plastic fantastic owner for autos, but recently decided to pick up a couple of 1911's. I have a Ruger SR1911 and a Sig Sauer Compact Stainless.

The Ruger is one heck of a gun for the money, IMO. The Novak 3-dots that came on the gun are great, and I am able to quickly get a great sight picture and shoot accurately. I initially believed the slide to be super tight, but discovered it was the hammer. With the hammer cocked there is a bit of rattle...and I'll pretend that's the sound of reliability. Of course, being new to the platform I have made this gun mine with an idiot scratch on the frame (doh!). I have between 150-200 rounds through it with 0 malfunctions. The only issue I had was testing different SD ammo and shooting 185gr Hornady TAP, the last round would fire but the slide would stick. Did not happen with 185, 230gr Gold Dot, or 185gr Critical Defense. General fit and finish are good, but some deburring, polishing, etc... may be in order in the future. Overall very happy with this one.

The Sig is a very good-looking gun with the exception of the nickel-plated slide stop (it makes no sense). Very, very little rattle. Balance is excellent with this CCO-sized gun. The front strap checkering is quite aggressive, very positive grip but after a hundred rounds you do feel the effect. The Sig NS that came on the gun are very bright, however the front blade is wide and the rear notch is narrow and I find it difficult to be precise at speed. The Sig has had absolutely no stoppages of any kind and has eaten everything I've tried. I bought this gun to carry, which brings me to the next question...I field stripped the gun this morning and found this...

Now, I'm not sure if the ejector is a MIM part (EDIT - YES IT IS MIM), but that appears to be a crack. Is that a crack? Or some other type of artifact from the mold/cast/whatever? I'm wondering if this is the type of thing you can watch closely but otherwise not worry to much about, or is this a critical fault that will fail in accordance with Murphy?

Looking for recommendations on a nice stainless slide stop and opinions on the ejector.

Thanks for any help or feedback.

No idea on the ejector.

I replaced the slide release on my Sig Stainless Carry with this one from Wilson Combat:

No fitting required, and matches the rest of the gun.

Call Sig (you have too call, no email, you might have to call multiple times too) and explain to them your issue. They will make it right at no cost to you. They might have you ship back to them for repair.

I had a feed issue with my C3, and they had me ship it back 2nd day air, no cost. They said it would take up to 6 weeks, but I had it back in 1 week.

Awesome customer service, they will take care of you. Just can be a PITA to get through the first time.

Troska - good recco, I ordered that part. Thanks.

Eleanor - thanks for the advice on Sig CS, I'll send it in if necessary but would prefer not to if it's not a critical issue.
