Ruger SR22? Ruger Mark III?

I have one of each and they are both good guns. What I will say, is that after I had the trigger worked in the MKIII, it really leaves a lot to be desired in the SR22 as far as the trigger goes. I also replaced the rear sight on the MK with a more traditional notched target sight b/c I could not get the hang of the "v" shaped rear sight. Just a couple things to think about.

I really love my Mark III. Yes the reviews are true they are a pain to reassemble. Dis-assembly is actually pretty quick. Putting them back together is a myriad of steps, flip this over, pull this up, insert that, pull this, etc. If you aren't sure youtube it. Several people have videos posted showing the process. I think it's like anything, if you do it a few times it becomes easy. However I think a lot of people, myself included, get so frustrated the first time they avoid it thus not learning as quickly.

I'll agree with that.

The more you do it, the easier it gets, not only because of practice, but also because the parts get broken in a bit. Also, if you install the bushing for the magazine disconnect, that also makes it easier to assemble as well as making the magazine seat better in the gun itself.

Ruger Mark III all the way.

Stripping isn't that hard. Watch a youtube video if you must.

I like my Mark iii 22/45. Its super accurate and a ton of fun. But I need to spend some time watching youtube videos. The day I got it I stripped it down and gave it a good cleaning (and because I want to know how my firearm functions before I start shooting it).. spent 3 hours trying to get it back together and could not do it. Took it in to Gander (yeah, yeah I know) and the smith that was in somehow got it stuck.. said he'd have to ship it back to Ruger. Talk about a crappy experience. He called the next day and had figured it out and had it back together. But good lord was that a pain in the rear.

Right now I think Im on the 2000 round cleaning plan.

Mark III disassembly is only difficult the first time doing it. Just follow the directions to a T. After going through the motions a few times to wear in the parts involved, it's pretty simple and quick. It's just that first time that sucks -- keep a mallet handy.

Well after I got the kit that removed the mag safety it's a lot easier. I struggled with it and got really mad because I couldn't get the kit in as easily as I thought I could. I've settled down now.

I put bushings in both of our 22/45s recently. Huge difference. Wife wanted a simple red dot for early Mother's Day present (top), took care of that yesterday as well.

I can't see comparing a 22/45 Mark III to an SR22, totally different animals. However, we like both of them for different reasons. The 22/45s just feel really good and solid, not a cheap "feel" at all. The SR doesn't feel cheap either.

I was at the range the other day and was consecutively nailing some 3.75" steel at 120-150 feet with my Mark III 22/45. It's a very accurate gun.

Here's my MKIII...

Here you can see the allen head of the 2 piece bolt stop pin. Unfortunately, there isn't enough clearance to remove the pin with the scope in the way so I have to remove it. It's no BFD really. I'm not hunting with it and it's off very little when I remount it.

I've never tried the SR22. Have put over a case of ammo thru the Mk III though. For decades I had a Smith 41 in the house, very nice piece of Old School workmanship. After acquiring the Mk III, I compared the two, the same day, side by side with 5 or 6 common brands of 22 ammo I had available. Sold the Smith shortly thereafter.
If you want to make it sing, put in the Volquartson kit ( Midway or Brownell ), you get a safe, slick, crisp trigger ( mine is under 2# ), lose the mag interlock safety and you have one very reliable, very accurate, major fun to shoot piece of hardware. My first one is Stainless, got a second in blue.
YMMV but anyone who tried mine wants to know if I'll help them install the kit. First 5 or 6 dis assemblies can be frustrating, the mag interlock safety makes it worse. Losing the mag interlock turns your Mk III into a Mk II as far as takedown / reassembly goes. Old parts can be re installed if selling the gun later.
You won't regret the Mk III, and it can be easily tweaked to make it much better than you would expect from Ruger.

That's what the chicks down at the Vu tell me. I didn't know there was videos of their pole techniques on YouTube. :)

Excellent thread. I've been thinking of a .22 pistol for awhile now. Leaning towards the SR22 or M&P 22 (even though I suspect it isn't quite the gun as a Mark III) simply because I can't stand the "buck rogers" look of the Mark III.

Thanks for all the insight guys.
