New Rock Island 10 MM Tactical 1911

Postby sgruenhagen44 on Sat May 18, 2013 12:42 pm

Well I just picked up a Rock Island 10 mm 1911. Anyone have any experience with these? Never shot one before but my buddy's 9mm RI 1911 ran great. Input welcome. Impulse buy never owned a 10 MM. Thought it was cool.

I have heard great things about rock island, a buddy of mine has one that runs great. I always thought 10mm would be cool too, I don't have the funds for that yet sadly. Let us know how it runs, it should be a great buy!

congratulations, 10mm is a lot of fun to shoot. I have 10mm in a kimber 1911 and a Glock 29sf. If you don't already have brass, I would suggest start searching, used 10mm brass is hard to come by. I was fortunate enough to find a little oover 2000 for sale on the THR a few months ago.

I have a RIA 1911 Tactical in 10mm. Great gun! I have other 10mm's and this is by far the softest shooting of them all. This gun shoots good out of the box, but I made a couple of small upgrades to take mine from good to great...

New Ed Brown trigger, tactical safety (the OEM ambi safety cut in to my thumbs) and MSH with Magwell. I also smoothed and polished the internals and replaced the FO rod in the front sight (didn't care for the orange). I also blacked out the rear sight.

Enjoy your new RIA! And yes, try to get a line on some brass ;)

What is a good price to pay for 10mm brass?
I am waiting on a G20 and have been looking at some.

I'm not sure what a good price is since I see so little for sale. I went back and looked at my purchase and I paid $200 for 1550 empty cases, 360 primed and sized cases, 160 rounds of factory reloaded ammunition, and 32 factory rounds of hornady xtp.

I jumped on it.

Well I feel reassured about my purchase now. I feel like it will be fun to shoot. It's pretty heavy so I'm not worried about the recoil.

I almost bought one a couple months back. Other than the huge roll mark on the slide, they're a sexy gun.

I have a RIA tactical II FS in 45acp and love it. It shoots everything that I feed it. Not one FTF or FTE yet.

Well, the OP is on my Ignore list, but the topic was so interesting I read it anyway. I have also heard good things about RI from a number of 1911 experts, and was surprised they would go the 10mm route.

To the OP I will say: Gee, you went ahead and just decided to start loading 10mm just because you saw the gun, and have NEVER given a moment's thought before now about loading it?? Gee, is your decision making process always like this?? BEFORE you start loading this caliber RTFM, and then RTFM again!! If you get up to max 10mm loads with Blue Dot, which is the powder of choice for 10mm, and then screw up by as little as .3 grain over the max because you're sloppy or careless with your handloading, you can have a case bulge and possibly blow wide open on you. Consider yourself warned, and don't bother to reply because you'll never be off my Ignore list.

Sam seems to like to make assumptions about me. For some reason this guy is always accusing me of not reading the manual, not sure why. Have never met the guy. BUt if I'm at oakdale Sam you are more than welcome to shoot it! I don't load near the maximum. I feel like with an auto disk it is a bad idea, not consistent enough. But I admit I know nothing about the caliber. Don't plan on loading it anytime soon. Probably will just be patient and slowly buy reloading stuff for it while I shoot factory ammo for it and build up a supply of brass. To guys that reload this caliber does it take large/magnum primers?

Notice the OP I never mention anything about reloading 10MM

Not long ago I found some brass at Starline. I checked a few days ago when this thread started. They say it is unavailable/ no BO

Like I said I know I will have to be patient. I'm just hoping I will be able to find some factory ammo.

The only stuff I could find was either high buck SD ammo, or some run of the mill, low- mid power stuff on GunBroker for about $0.60/ rd. the SD stuff was $2-3/ rd if I recall.
Even dealing with all the crap going on the past 6 mos, finding 10mm ammo was a whole new frustration.
