Best .22 pistol for plinking and reactive targets?

Getting back into shooting .22s. I have a nice target pistol with a red dot but would like another pistol with open sights for shooting steel and such. What do you guys shoot?

Agree with Hmac, I have all Rugers, although mine are MKIII. My wife has a 22/45 and I have a 22/45 set up to replicate my comp pistol and a MkIII for plinking and bullseye. Its tough to go wrong with a Ruger. Browning Buckmarks are very nice as well, they are the two leaders in rimfire pistols.

I have a Ruger Mk2 stainless slab side target with all VQ guts that is amazing minus the stupid high rake Glockish grip angle. Someday I'll most likely trade it off on a 22/45 to remedy that. If Springfield would get off their asses and build a .22 XDm to duplicate my comp gun, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I'll second the McFadden Ultimate clip loaders as required equipment. The only downside is you'll burn twice as much ammo every time you take out the gun.

I've had really good luck with my Walther P22 as well, although reviews I have seen are mixed.

The Ruger's and Buckmark's are good guns and I've had both, but if you shoot them side-by-side with the 41 you'll see what I mean.

Also, look at amazon.com for the reactive targets. You can get some decent steel for $35-80+.

You can't go wrong with any of the following I like them all for different reasons. I use my Marvel for Bullseye. If you decide on the Ruger or Buckmark get a Target or Hunter model with the 7" barrel you will appreciate the longer sight radius.

Ruger 22/45 ($300-550)
Browning Buckmark ($300-550)
Smith 41 ($600 and up to 1,800 for a custom shop version)
Marvel 1911 conversion ($400-550)

The Buckmark is very accurate with a nice single stage trigger. Take down is ok for cleaning, but some gunk can get down behind the grip panels, and that is a PITA because all the controls are spring loaded and held together by the grip panels.
