460 S&W

Postby DoxaPar on Wed Jul 10, 2013 9:52 pm

Got to shoot a 460 S&W this weekend. Major smiley face (even though I couldn't hit anything).

Anyone else got their hands on a 460 or 500?

Very cool. How bad was the recoil? I wish I could shoot the high power pistols, but after breaking my wrist in high school, hard recoiling pistols really hurt my wrist and I worry about dropping the weapon. Qualcorp, offered to let me shoot his Desert Eagle 50 AE but I was too worried about dropping his beautiful gun, so I declined. I then watched another guy at our gun club, that had one deformed arm, grab the gun and one hand it. All I could think was "don't let this guy grab me, he must have one helluva grip". And he shot it as well as most with a two handed grip.

Yes I have shot both. Had a student ask if he could shoot the 460 for his carry test. Ah, hell no, I did not want to stand behind him on an indoor range for 30 or 40 rds.

My worst experience was a Casul 454, 2 rds of that was enough for me.

The recoil wasn't as bad as I expected but I think I had a death grip on it. However, my brother-in-law nearly let it fly outta his hand the first time he shot it. He was pretty nervous about pulling the trigger a second time. :-P

Never shot any handgun more powerful than the wimpy .44 mag. That's enough handful for me. And by most accounts, enough gun to manage an emergency bear or boar encounter.

I have a T C Contender 44mag that I rechambered to 444marlin back in 1981 if anyone wants to shoot it. 8 full rifle loads and my hand goes numb. Does a good job of taking two deer in Michigan with one shot. Doe on back side dropped faster than buck in front. Was so excited I never saw the doe until after the shot was taken. 265gr horrnady over 47gr of imr4198.

I had a TC Encore in .460, but the big single shot pistol wasn't for me.

Now I have a S & W .500 revolver, I think it's a hoot.

I have a S&W 460XVR. Love it. It is awesome to be able to use three different calibers to go from meek to thunderous. With .45LC it is like shooting a .38spc in a big .357 revolver. Very low recoil. Both .454 Casull and .460 seem to feel about the same as each other (which means a huge kaboom and a stout recoil) but the muzzle blast from the .460 is truly spectacular. I describe it this way: .45LC you hear a pop and see a little flash; .454 is a major boom and a big flash; .460 is also a major boom but the flash overwhelms everything in front of you and the wind blows your hair back. :-) Overall though, the gun is heavy enough that it isn't difficult to control with any loads.

My brother has the S&W 500 and we've shot both side by side. The 500 seems to push back a lot harder in your hand, but doesn't come up much differently than the .460. I can shoot a few cylinders of .460 without too much discomfort, but after two cylinders of 500 my hand hurts.

Ah, the big bore stuff!! I love it!

I have a DE50, 500 mag in 4" and 8" and a 460 which I just got. The key to these calibers IMHO is to RELOAD!! Can't really load the 50AE down, so 34gr of H110 with a 300gr pill is what it gets, and it's fun to shoot. Recoil is there, but nothing outrageous. Not an all day range gun, but manageable.

I load pansy loads of 10gr Trail Boss with a 330gr lead pill i the 500. Shoots like a cap gun. Fun. I reload in the mid range and they're quite a bit more stout but still OK. I have some Corbon 440gr rounds that are quite powerful and not for the faint of heart or hand.

I just got a slug of stuff for the 460. Brass for 45 Colt, 454 Casull and 460 mag along with dies and bullets. In fact that is this weekend's project, to get some of those loaded.

If anyone ever wants to shoot any of these, let me know.

I have a 460, scoped. I can go about 75yds safely. Have yet to shoot a deer with it. I guess Im kinda scared to squeeze the trigger without ear plugs in. Last year I hunted with my earmuffs on my head, so I could pull them down before I shoot. I dont mind the recoil at all. I have shot over 100rnds at a time, with no after effects.
It is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.

Biggest handguns I own are a desert eagle mark vii in 44 magnum and a rossi ranch hand in 44 magnum.

Here's mine.

They are certainly a hoot to shoot. Recoil isn't as bad as most think due to the massive weight. With the scope, mine weighs in at 88 oz (5.5 pounds).
As someone else mentioned 454 Casull can hurt much worse. My 454 Super Redhawk is more painful than my 460. The 460 is a bigger push, while the 454 is a massive quick snap.

I don't shoot 45 Colt or 454 out of my 460 anymore. I used to play around with those, but found that accuracy can suffer significantly with the shorter rounds. So all my loads are now done with 460 brass only. When I want to shoot powder puff rounds, I use 255 gr lead bullets with Trail Boss. Mid range I like the same bullet with a lower dose (33 grains) of IMR4227. I clocked those going around 1,500 fps. Then when you want to let the county know that you are at the range, you light up the full power loads. Lots of fun. And they can be very accurate, if you can do your part.
