What do these #'s mean?

Postby Rodentman on Sat Jul 27, 2013 3:00 pm

What, if anything, do the numbers on the FA cylinders mean?

Image

Also on the 45 ACP, 45 Colt, and 454 Casull there are odd numbers and they are not in order CW or CCW around the cylinder. I know I am odd, they don't need to tell me that, so I presume they mean something else?

Does anyone know?

I have no idea, but Ruger does it too. Must mean something....Oh wait, could they be partial serial numbers to the gun frame?

Perhaps it deals with cylinder boring ? Diameter or angle etc.

Perhaps it's the number of 10,000ths of an inch that the cylinders are off of the specified print?? With FA, who is positively anal retentive about QC, it might make sense.

I always wondered: why don't they mark them 1-2-3-4-5(-6)?

I've seen numbered charge holes on the cylinder of a friends 625 but they were sequential. Never heard the reason why exactly but it would be nice for those occasions where you get distracted when cleaning and you loose track of which charge hole you were working on.

I have seen markings on revolver cylinders in a book article that described them as markings that denote the order of accuracy from the chambers (in a specific load, I am guessing, and with 1 being the most accurate of the cylinders). However, the photo I had seen had the chamber numbers consecutively marked.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll call FA and ask them. I don't know if the FA manual would say. I didn't get a manual with the used gun. I will check the online manual. BTW the gun is much lighter than my S&W 460 but it is well designed and balanced so that recoil isn't an issue in the sense that-yeah there's muzzle flip but recoil does not hurt the hand-just ride with the recoil...

On convertible Rugers they mark the supplied cylinders with the last three digits of the frame's serial number and warn against using any other cylinder.

I'm an idiot. Yes the numbers on the cylinder are the SN, which happens to end in 15379, which are all odd numbers but not in order, which confused the poor, poor, and much maligned Rodentman.

I'll bring the FA, the 460 xvr and both the 4" and 8" 500 mags. We'll have a blast.

Now that you solved the number question, how does the 45 ACP headspace (rimless) in the same cylinders as the 45 Colt and 454 Casull (rimmed)?

45 ACP normally use a moon clip in a revolver.

Thanks.
