Taurus Model 66?

Postby Garret7857 on Tue Aug 20, 2013 3:21 pm

I have decided that I want to get a .357 magnum revolver, and I would really like to get a Smith and Wesson 686 plus but it's out of my price range unless I want to save for it over several months, but I hear the Taurus Model 66 is basically the same revolver but I have heard that Taurus semi-automatics have issues occasionally so I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with Taurus revolvers and if it'd be safe to just go with Taurus or if it's really worth it in the long run to save up for the 686 plus.

Thanks :P

Nothin quite like a S&W 625 ... sept maybe a 610 ... er a 327 TRR8!

Otherwise, in any other caliber/configuration, I'd go with a Vaquero er a Blackhawk!

I've heard mixed reviews on the Taurus wheelguns ... my buddy's got a 85 that's probly 10yr old, and has never had an issue ... and is actually quite nice! ... however, we both also had 94's which were absolute garbage! ... also, resale on Tauri is probly closer to 30% ... vs typical 66% for S&W er such!

Get a smith... worth every penny above a taurus.

I'd save and get the Smith. If you compromise and get the Taurus, its just that much saving again to get the smith in your safe if your still not happy.

Either way, I'd try and get my hands on both models to compare them, and see if the Taurus will satisfy your desires.

While you save more, you may come across a fine used smith for a price that meets your budget better. If you choose to wait and get the smith, the day you bring it home will be better as you'll know you bought the one you wanted and didn't compromise.

JMHO as I've settled in the past and it has always cost me more time and money.

Another option would be a Ruger GP100, Arnzen has one for $558.

I happen to agree, even if I haven't fired mine yet.

Another vote here for the GP100. Built like a tank, with Ruger's exceptional customer service behind it.

oooh that is a pretty gun as well. I'm starting to really kick myself for not wanting to get a revolver off the bat for my carry weapon. I plan on getting to the range before school starts and renting a wheel gun for the first time and if I like it enough, hell I might sell my Glock to help pay for a revolver :D

Liking the feedback so far and it does make sense to go home with something I really want rather than to compromise. And tomorrow I start hopefully quitting smoking the money I save from quitting that will fund my 686P :)

I've got a Taurus model 85 ultralight .38+p revolver, and I've never had an issue (bought it used, from Lakes for a song). With well over 500 rds through it and no hiccup, I trust it enough to be my EDC. Very accurate for a snubbie too. Even at 25 yds I'm hitting within 4" of center.

I have a Taurus 85 38spcl and two 605 .357 mags and they all work just fine.
These are j frame size guns.

Get a high round count through a Taurus and you will have breakages. We all talk about buying quality, if that matters you will avoid the Brazilian Bull.

If you can't get a smith and wesson I would suggest the ruger. If that's not possible get the taurus. If that's not possible get a rossi. If that's not possible... I got nothing...
