Fiber optic front sight

Postby kowalzekc on Sun Sep 08, 2013 3:47 pm

I am looking for a decent fiber optic front sight for my g17. What do you all reccomend? I don't want to break the bank but I also do not want one where the optic will fall out to easy. I know that it is most likely going to happen no matter what.

Thought. Oh I should start this is a carry/possible idpa pistol.

For a carry piece I'd want something that had tritium in it for low light/no light use. TRUGLO makes FO front sights with tritium in them. They aren't going to be as popular for gaming but if it's a piece you use for both I'd rather it lean to being more functional for protection vs competition.

Because it isn't a 34, you would be better off getting the truglo tritium fiber optic for dual purpose since the height isn't an issue.

Warren may be the "thing" but I just put a set of Tru-Glo TFO that are excellent. I got the set that has a yellow rear and green front and they are great! I took a little time and bid on several different sets on ebay, until I got mine for $74 incl shipping. I bought another set for the G30 but they are Green/Green.

The fiber optic jumps at you in daylight and the tridium really glows bright at night. If you're near Edina, you are welcome to stop by and I'll let you look at them. I've installed 6 sets on diffrent peoples guns and all of them love them.

Snowgun, that looks like a EGW front. I drilled mine on the gammer gun so the fiber goes all the way through - made it much brighter.

I have used this for years for my front sights which are drilled through in both front and rear.

Cut a piece a bit long, slide it in and use a lighter to melt the front part of the fiber optic to a nice size glob. Let cool, slide the fiber optic out the front and slide it in from the rear which leaves the newly melted part at the rear of the sight. Now while pressing forward on the rear newly melted part of the fiber optic I use a lighter on the front to melt it down and snug it up. A lot cheaper than buying factory replacements and works great.

What diameter do you order? I'm thinking about making a front sight for my Slug Barrel for my shotgun as a backup sight in case my scope failed. I just cannot determine what diameter would work best.

I did not make from scratch, I measured the original fiber optic in my sight and ordered the same diameter.
