Para LDA Hi-Cap

Postby ZardozCZ on Sun Oct 20, 2013 8:38 pm

I was a the range yesterday and the gentleman next to me was growing a bullseye hole at 50 feet. I complimented his good shooting and asked about his pistol. It was a Para Ordnance Hi-Cap (double stack) LDA in stainless. He asked if I'd like to shoot it, and I don't think I've ever shot better. I didn't always hit the bullseye, but I did grow it bigger at 20'. I was only going to shoot a few rounds, but it shot so nicely that I emptied the mag.

Smitten I am!

I checked their web site and Para does not list this gun. Is it out of production? Anyone know of one for sale from a shop or private? This is one of those things that won't let go, I really want one now.

Thanks for any info you can share.

They are out of production. Armslist usually has a few.

I really really like the LDA guns. To me the trigger is kind of an idealized version of the Glock single-and-a-half action trigger. I may have to pick one up one of these days . . .

I talked with the Para Rep at Outbreak Omega, they said that they would be bringing the LDA back. But that was 2 years ago and I'm yet to see any further mention of it on their site.

One of the negatives is it's kind of a complicated mechanism. According one of the better gunsmiths up here he took one apart and was having a hard time getting it back together, contacted Para, and they recommended sending it to them as they hadn't had any luck talking it thru over the phone.

That being said. I absolutely love mine. I know it's blasphemy for a 1911 to have a D/A trigger, but it works. I find it easier to get into a rhythm when shooting it.

Keep an eye out - they are usually not highly sought after as it's one of those guns that you have to shoot to appreciate.

I have an opposing opinion, and I think the LDA's suck, and apparently I'm not alone because they introduced them in about 2002 and then pulled them off the market several years back. I DO have a Para P14.45 Limited that I absolutely love, and behind my 50GI this would be my back up gun. The nickel mags have a little more space in them, so you can have 15+1 rounds of 45 ammo in the gun!! That's a huge amount of lead to sling!!

I have several DA/SA EAA's, and in my opinion they are the "right" way to do DA/SA. Long trigger pull on 1st shot, short, crisp trigger pull on following shots. The LDA drove me nuts with its LOOOONNNGGGG SA pull, and ITSHTF I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to pull the trigger back to the firing point and then trip it without jerking the gun left. Slow fire maybe it's enjoyable, but I can't see how you can have that much pull in SA mode and not over-run the trip point on the trigger.

That's my $.02, if it's worth that much...

It's worth a bunch, thanks.

I have a CZ 97B that I like a lot. I think that's why I liked the LDA Hi-Cap. The one I shot had been worked on by "the boys in the desert" so wasn't quite stock. Still, I shot better with it than the stock 97B, so.... instead of hoping CZ ever comes out with a stainless 97B (in 10mm would be fun), I could do with the Para LDA Hi-Cap.

I'm still learning to improve, and maybe getting to the point where I can tell what hardware works better for me. Like I just bought a BMW motorcycle. I know it's not for everyone, but it's the most awesome bike I've ever ridden. Taking the Needles Highway in the Black Hills last summer was a joy on it. Other bikes not nearly so much. Shooting the Para was like riding the BMW. I could do better than ever before because the hardware made it possible.

I've a lot to learn yet and appreciate hearing from others so far ahead on the path I'm on. Still, I gotta take each step, but hopefully with fewer stumbles by listening to good advise.
