Shooting Issue

Hello,

I have a question regarding shooting my handgun. Hopefully its ok to post this in this section. Today when I was shooting every shot was going down and to the left . I know most likely no one can correct this online, but does anyone have a suggestion for me to try and correct it? I am taking my class to carry soon, and I am worried I won't pass if I am shooting off center like today. I have been practicing and not correcting it by myself. I am shooting with a glock with adjustable sights, and I had the idea to move the sights so that I was purposefully aiming higher and to the right, but that doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do, but maybe its worth a shot. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I am going shooting tomorrow morning again, and I would love to pay for someones range fees and let em shoot my guns if anyone is willing to come help me tomorrow morning. Anyways, thanks for any replies!

It's your trigger press. Work on dry firing (many good youtube videos)

Thank you, I will check out some videos tonight and practice dry fire and see if it will help tomorrow.

Don't stress too much. The target you shoot at for the carry class is pretty large. For the most part they just want to make sure you can land your shots on a person without shooting them in the head or missing them completely. Just relax and you'll pass no problem.

The above target assumes you are a right handed shooter. If a left handed shooter transpose the causes about the vertical centerline.

Like grimbeaver said, don't sweat the qualifying. My wife passed it with ease. Although she's only been shooting about a year, I spent a lot of time working with her trigger press technique and she is a pretty good shot. As long as you hit the paper they won't give you a hard time.

The Youtube videos and the chart posted here should help you correct the problem. Before you go moving your sights, you should shoot the gun from a solid rest. That's the ONLY way you will be absolutely certain whether it is the sights are off, or you are yanking the trigger.

If you absolutely need someone to go with you and check the sights, give me a shout. I am free most of the time. The only hold back is my hip pain has had me down most of this week. I'd be glad to help if the pain isn't bad when you want to go.

Had the same issue when I first started out. Mine was trigger jerk, bought snap caps and did dry firing, you could see it then. Practiced with snap caps, and fixed the issue.

I have a cheap rail mounted laser I'm going to loan him. He can put it on and dry fire and he'll know immediately if he's "pulling" or not. We'll get this fixed quickly Brian. It's good to see you asking for help rather than pulling your hair out trying to figure out where the problem is. I look forward to meeting you.

Thanks, I will be practicing dry fire, I think it was my finger pull being wrong.

Or you might be anticipating the recoil an unconciously pushing against the recoil which makes your shots go low. You can have good trigger press but if you are flinching it will show as low hits. If you have some dummy snap caps you can have someone randomly put a snap cap in the mag. When you pull the trigger on a chambered snap cap you can see if you are flinching your aim down. Alot of that is just getting used to the recoil pulse, which just takes time.

I don't have much to add except to confirm that the shooting test for the permit is pretty easy (just got my permit in the mail yesterday, in fact). I honestly thought it should be harder when the instructor told us what it was going to be, and I found that while shooting the test, I was reminding myself to slow down because the time limits were VERY generous and the accuracy standard was not difficult. Just take it at an easy pace and press the trigger smoothly and you'll do fine.

Thanks for the advice on the test, and yeah I am very thankful for all the help that was offered to me. Thanks again to everyone! I think it is pretty much down to my trigger pull which BigDog58 has offered to help me figure out.

one drill I have people work on is to take a stance like you are shooting. Do NOT use a gun thought.

Have someone stand off to the side and smack (lightly) your hands mimicking recoil. Randomly missing your hands.

You will be surprised how you react.

I should of Saud more on this. Your stance, grip are huge in my opinion for accuracy. When I first started out shooting pistols I was ok, as time went I got worse, all the way to pitifully. Basically I had a tough time hitting paper at 7 yards. Lol. At a rest my pistol was dead on stupid accurate at 25 yards (Springfield range officer) so its me.. I used the sane chart as above and snap caps to identify the issue. Then watched a lot of YouTube about stance. The result, huge difference.... Using proper grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control are key.. I'm not going to say I'm a awesome shot now, because I'm not. But I can do enough to generally hit what I want. And feel that at 25 yards I can neutralize a target quickly if need be. Just as long as I do my part.

My fiance's dad on the other had, is darn fun to watch. He cam do just about anything he wants, and he doesn't seam to need to try very hard... But he has pleanty of trigger time too.. and he's good. Lol me, I need to work hard to play..
