Anyone have this problem?

Postby gjlog on Mon Nov 25, 2013 10:40 am

I was carrying my Magnum Research Micro Desert Eagle in a soft/sticky holster in my coat pocket. For some reason the plastic bottom piece of the magazine slipped from the mag and the spring and all ammo dumped out into my pocket. I am glad that I did not need to use it yesterday, but I have lost all confidence in this as a carry piece. Anyone heard of this happening before or have any suggestions on how to avoid it in the future?
Thanks,
GJ

Had you taken the mag apart previously? If not, then i can't even imagine this happening. If so, you prolly just didn't get the little notch in the little hole.

It's a good question. I compared my Micro with a Sig magazine and there is a difference. With the Sig, you have to push in a button-type thing to remove the bottom of the magazine. There is no button-thing in the Micro, although there is a hole where one could sit. I am now not sure when I changed bases a year ago, whether I misplaced that part without realizing it or whether it never had it.

Check the magazine that failed against your spare magazine, and see it there is anything missing.

This isn't something that happens every day, but it can happen if the magazine baseplate is bumped or installed incorrectly. A weakened spring can also contribute, depending on how the magazine is designed.

I'd suggest reassembling the magazine and seeing if it happens again; if it does, get a rebuild kit or buy a new mag.

Until it's resolved, I have begun carrying a S+W .38 spl. Like an old-timey camera--just point and shoot.

A quick update on the magazine. I emailed Magnum Research and informed the representative of the problem. He/she replied that no one there had ever heard of this happening. Long story short, they sent out a new magazine at no charge. It is great to work with companies that stand behind their product. Big thumbs up for Magnum Research.

That's good to hear. In a world of customer service horror stories it is good to hear about the good experiences to temper it all.
