Dude!! You need to read up some on the history of 10mm's, and the ammo that goes with them. 10mm is a cult caliber, and a pretty potent one, to the point that the recoil of the Smith 1076 was too painful for some Federal agents, and thus was born the 40 Short & Weak. So yeah, the recoil can be too much for some people.
2nd is that the cheap ammo is watered down crap, driving a 180 grain bullet at 1035 FPS, when the S&W 40 drives it at 980 FPS. Whooppee EFFEN do!! The factory spec for full power ammo is a 200 grain bullet going 1200 FPS.

This is an ideal cartridge to handload, from the sense that good ammo is very expensive and the cheap stuff isn't found on most store shelves. Unfortunately, the 10mm is also a caliber where you can screw up big time if your not careful with your reloads, and at your current level of knowledge you are at least TWO reloading manual's worth of reading away from having enough knowledge just to START not being dangerous.
You do NOT just idly decide to pick up a 10mm and merrily start shooting it, any more than a 454 Casull or some other potent calibers. Go rent one from Bill's and see what it's like before you spend any more time assuming you can just pick one up and go with it.
