Woods carry

Discussion of handguns

When I was able to walk in my woods in Northern Wisconsin, I always carried my GP100 with 180 grain heavy loads in a nylon holster with thumb break. B ut my primary gun was my Ithaca Model 37 shotgun with a 20" barrel. Ammo selection was dependent on what I was looking for.

One-time while cutting timber, I had to fend off a black bear. Was just done re-fueling it when bear came close, starting and revving the saw was enough for him to leave.

Bear attacks are very rare. I spend a week in the white mountains of Alaska staying in BLM cabins. I carried my Glock 17. We had a 12ga packed on one of the sleds.
Wasn't worried about bears, but rather two legged animals. Most if not all the bears were sleeping in February.
The only problem encountered was a moose blocking the trail.

Fishermen in griz country there usually carry 12gauges, or marlin guide gun in 45/40. Some carry bear spray.

In Minnesota, I wouldn't worry about black bears.

The only thing I really worry about in the woods are my dogs, I don't really worry that something will come after me, but possibly my dogs. That and the two legged animals.

You are 100% correct on worrying about your dogs Ed.
To a pack of wolves, a dog looks like a porterhouse steak.

Nah, more like how a burglar looks to a Papua cannibal. Catch someone who doesn't belong in your home and can then be the basis of a meal.

The best deterrent to wolf/dog problems seems to be a beeper collar left on the movement mode. Those beeps every couple of seconds seems to give warning to the wolves something is amiss and the move away from the obvious human noise.

It seems to work well enough that I haven't had any wolf/dog issues over the last half dozen even with a wolf den a quarter mile from the rear door of the cabin near which we walk regularly over the summer. I do carry a firearm "just in case" but everyone seems to know, understand, and obey the rules well enough to get along.

Now I just have to place a new rule against the wolves peeing on the main door of the cabin, it tends to get my dogs doing the same.

My review is up in the other thread, but here is my new set up.

And the set up I was using. Wilderness Safe Packer, it "splits" open for access, and holds a additional magazine.

Large opening for a pack waist strap to go through.

And the two guns side by side

I would sometimes use my Kelley holsters too.

I used to work with Dave Mech.
One time, a "hunter" shot and killed one of our wolves that had a tracking collar on it.
Along with deer hair etc, we found in it's stomach a bunch of Snicker wrappers.
Obviously this deceased wolf had a sweet tooth
