Unusual find

Postby gjlog on Sat Apr 26, 2014 3:02 pm

Hi All, I just came across a Detonics Pocket Nine from a local seller. In pristine condition. I fired it and it was pretty nice. But, I don't know much about this pistol. There's not much out there on it other than that it was made only a few years. Does anyone own one or know about it?

And you are asking us instead of using Google for what reason?? Seriously, WTF is your personal inititative and responsibility?? In this particular case, this is a real rarity, and the brass is proprietary, and in a gun that size it's a wrist breaker. It's a half brother of the 460 Rowland and the parent of the 45 Super, which is much more mainstream. Plus the fact that it would take 1/10th the time to just Google it rather than upload picture you took and then write the post.

Sorry to be a Grinch, but I've had a bad week, and even if I hadn't, your question is so far off the beaten track that probably about 3 of us remember this nasty little oddity. But noooo......, you gotta come in here and ask us something that you could learn all about by typing just 11 characters into Google.

A long time ago shortly after the great Schism that spawned this board, ,Joel Rosenburg referred to it as "The Daycare Canter", which it wasn't, but you seem to think that we're your nannies anyway. Dunno about the rest of you, but I'm insulted by somebody expecting me to type 11 characters into Google because they're too lazy to do it themselves....

Hmm...OP says there is "not much out there on it" which to me implies he has Googled it. Then he asks if anyone owns or knows about it. Sounds perfectly legit to me if I had found one for sale and needed a quick yea or nay on purchasing.

I might feel differently if OP had just registered to pose question, but he has been a member for 6 years. So I will agree that a poster in this thread is out of line.. But it's not the OP.

gjlog,

I don't know a damn thing about the Detonics Pocket Nine but I do find it unfortunate that you can't ask an honest question without getting a beat down and a lecture.

Breathe, Sam.

You're not obligated to respond to what you perceive as stupid questions. You have the ability to ignore stuff you don't like.

And I say that in the nicest way possible.

Wow, seems the OP looked it up on the big old internet and did not find much. So took the time to post a neat
little photo of a new purchase and ask if anybody had any personal information on they would like to share.

Thanks for the photo!!!

"The Daycare Canter"

If you knew how to spell "center" you might have a point. This is about the eleventy-billionth time someone has posted a GUN question on a GUN board and you've taken a **** on their thread. Others are being kind - playing it off with a jocular tone. I, on the other hand, think you need to get over yourself.

When they first came out, it was considered small for a 9mm. You see them used once in awhile at gunshows, usually people ask around $500.
The pocket 9 was used in the old Miami Vice TV show. The character Sonny Crocket carried it as a backup gun.

My bad - definitely my bad - I saw Detonics and my brain filled in the "451", as that was the original offering from Detonics. Apologies to all, esp the original poster, though a Google search still would have turned up more info than most of us could have offered. Like I said, it's been a week that's been one of the worst 5 of my lifetime. I misread the post, and over-reacted big time, and I'm a total jerk for doing it.

I almost said it the other night. Now I can't help it. You Sam, are an arrogant prick.
'Nuff said.

At the time (mid-80s), these were about the best you could do in a 9mm backup gun. Nowadays you can get much more reliable, lighter, and more comfortable gun for less money but there is pretty good collector interest in the Pocket Nine (and Detonics guns in general) so if it is in nice condition it probably isn't a bad investment.

Expect sharp recoil from the blowback action and a heavy trigger pull.
