PMR-30 vs RIA 22TCM

Postby gun_fan111 on Sat Aug 23, 2014 7:22 am

Was just browsing GB and noticed that PMR-30 is back in the more reasonable $500 range. Anybody owns one and can comment on the good and the bad? If looking at range use only - would 22TCM be more fun?

Just looking for a lively Saturday morning discussion. I know there is only one right answer here - buy both :)

Thanks

I took my 22tcm to the range today. I find it a lot of fun. Big blast, big fireball, little recoil. 10g of H110 with a 40g bullet. Besides I like to reload. The tcm is fun to reload, time consuming but fun. Of course 30 rounds of 22 WMR is fun too. Guess it's up to the shooter. The RIA comes with a 9mm bbl and spring as well so that's like getting 2 guns.

And of course, yes buy both the tcm and the 22WMR.

Last time I checked, you can't convert a PMR30 to 9mm.

Or reload .22WMR.

I have had my PMR since Febuary, 3 failure to feed in over 600 rds through it. all my fault, didn't take my time and load the mag properly. It is a great range gun. especially when you rip off 30 rounds in a row. it gets other people asking what you are shooting. another gun purchase with no buyers remorse.

PMR would be a good trapping side arm. More power than .22lr in a pistol for coon, and still not a big hole. .22TCM would splatter bones and ruin pelts. If they ever get down into the $350ish range, I'll probably snag one just for that. I don't reload .22lr either, but I still shoot it. ;)

RIA 22TCM loaded weight with 17 rounds is 2.84 pounds

KelTec PMR30 loaded weight with 30 rounds is 1.23 pounds

My dad has had the PMR 30 since they came out. Its a great little gun. When he got to about 500 rounds through it, the gun began having failure to eject and feed problems. Some research indicated that there was a problem with the barrels. Kel Tec has redesigned them. The old barrels are fluted. Kel Tec would have replaced for free, but since he lost his proof of purchase, he had to buy the new barrel. Kel Tec told him that the had started enforcing thier lifetime warranty to original owners only. It has always been that way, Kel Tec just never enforced it. Since he could not prove he was the original owner, he was SOL. The barrel did not cost very much and was shipped rather quickly. Since then he has put another couple hundred through it and has not had a problem since. He has a 22 TCM also. I dont know of very many retailers that sell the ammo though. He lives south of the metro and usually buys his ammo at Little Crow or The General Store (?) in Osakis. But then again, 22 WMR still seems to be in short supply as well.

Thanks for your replies everybody. Both these guns are going on my wish list - PMR is winning so far though so it will be first :)

KelTec took 3.5 months to repair the RFB I had. I sold it without ever shooting it once it was returned from their service.

That's the main reason I'll never spend over $400 on a KT ever again.

IMHO if you don't want to take on reloading the 22tcm you shouldn't run out and get one. Ammo is scarce. But reloading it is easy and fun. I find 10g of H110 with ASW's 40g bullet works great.

I saw some 22tcm ammo at the new Runions in Monticello.
