9 luger defensive ammo

Postby Joat on Sat Nov 29, 2008 10:37 am

After seeing in another thread that Streichers is local and cheap on defensive ammo, I have a question. Do I get 124 grain +P or 147 grain normal pressure to run in my CZ 75 compact? I know that 9mm +p is SAAMI is roughly equal to CIP for max pressure and is ok to use in my CZ. Do I give up a little weight and gain a little pressure? Of more likely does it mater either is better than the Winchester white box 147 grain JHP I've been carrying?

I'm a fan of mid wieght projectiles for 9mm. However you need to test them in your firearm for perfect function. And yes just about any HP ammo that striechers sells is going to be better than WWB Hp's.

"flamesuit on"
use the 124 +p, the WWB is just dandy ammo too but I am a firm believer in every possible advantage in the ultimate bad encounter, once you got it go practice and practice and when you are done, practice some more. As for the 147g, yeech, 9mm isnt suited to heavyier bullets, stick with waht works, has worked and will continue to work.
Your better bet here of course is to go off and get a 10mm, great gun, packs just a little less punch than a 20mm but with half the recoil :D

The two different bullets will also have different points of impact due to the weight difference. You'll have to test them to see how they correspond to your point of aim.

I have tested both in ballistic gelatin. I'd say that they perform about equally. The 147 opens up slightly larger, the 124+p opens up faster, both penetrate about the same.

I'd take either one but I'd stick with one. Right now I have 2 boxes of 124+p to go through before I switch to anything.
BTW, the 124+p is a little heavier recoiling than the 147. I find that it slaps the frame harder on my M&Pc

Regarding walmart SD loads... those are just mushrooming hollow points, they don't mushroom nearly as large, don't optimize penetration, etc etc etc.

I'm a big fan of the 147gr Federal Tactical HST for 9mm, granted I get them for free, so I'm biased, but I like how they shoot, they're meant for people, and they've got a little more stopping power. I know a lot of people like the 124gr and lower weights, but in my opinion, if you're shooting a 9mm, that extra weight is nice and if you carry what you practice with (which you should do anyways) then you'll be comfortable with that heavier load when "go-time" happens.

again, just my opinion.

Carry ball ammo and be prepared to run like hell. It'll keep you from being overly optimistic about the results you'll get when you shoot someone with a handgun.....

Ohhh HammAR... some one is saying that carrying ball is ineffective!

No, someone was saying HANDGUNS are.

;)

If you're going to a gunfight bring a rifle. And friends. Friends with rifles. And radios. And mortars.....

Seriously though, I understand that the ammo is something that you can actually control, and I sort of understand why people obsess about it, but, in the end, you're still shooting something pretty damn weak if you're armed with a handgun. It isn't TV, and the odds are pretty good you're gonna have to shoot more than once whether you're shooting ball or super-uber-ninja-tactical-sharpened-flying ashtrays with "Made In The USA" engraved in the hollowpoint.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

IMHO the two top 9mm Luger handgun self-defense rounds are:

Corbon DPX +P 115gr

Federal Hydra-Shok JHP 124 or 147gr

OK, duly noted but most of us in their daily existence cannot have the infantry/or other backup ready to pull their bacon out of the fire. We have to make do with what we have and a handgun better than a knife or empty hand. We all have to make do with what we have available. I’m not saying, I’m just saying…
