Gunsmith recommendation

Postby gargoyle999 on Wed May 27, 2015 7:05 pm

Hi, I have a 9mm Shield and I would like to get new sights and trigger kit installed. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith to do the install? I'm reading the sight install on a Shield can be difficult. I live south of the river but I'm willing to drive where ever around the cities to find someone that does good work as I have a 2nd 9mm Shield on the way and a 40mm Shield on layaway so I'll be getting the same work on them. I'm new to shooting and guns and the Shield is my EDC so I don't want try this myself. Thank you!

The gentleman at Bill's in Hudson whose name escapes me.

Try Horton's Gun Smithing in Jordon. His day job keeps him busy as a P.E. Mechanical Engineer for a company down in LeSueur. His name is Mike and he has a machine shop at his home and he does phenomenal work!

As an aside, I recently added the apex trigger kit to my 9mm Shield. Reduced pull by a couple pounds and smoothed it out some. Did not knock my socks off though. Take up is very long due to the trigger safety, which is still as annoying as factory trigger. As for install, the hardest part is removing the rear sight, but it's not impossible. Pretty simple job if you have a vise to hold the slide while the rear sight is pounded out. I don't recall how the front sight is attached as it's not impacted by a trigger job.

Good luck.

My rear sight on my Shield was VERY difficult to remove. I would recommend a sight tool.

I managed removal just fine with a set of brass punches, on an entirely unrelated note... I now need a new set of brass punches.

A sight pusher would have been nice.

I ruined my brass punches. The sight would not move until I clamped the slide in a vice and used a steel punch. Same on install to get it centered on the slide again. It was tight!
