Taurus 85 light primer strike

Postby purd0027 on Tue Aug 25, 2015 8:44 pm

Hello,
Any other Taurus owners on the board? I've got a Taurus 85 that will sometimes give light primer strikes when firing in double action. Single action always fires. I can send back to Taurus but they want me to pay $35 shipping. Anyone else run into this issue with their Taurus? Gun seems decent for the money, besides this (rather serious) problem.

While I do not have a Taurus 85, I am familiar with the platform.

A few questions that might help track down the issue:

1. Does this happen with all ammo or one specific brand?
2. How many rounds through the gun?
3. Do you have any aftermarket parts (hammer, trigger return spring, etc)
4. When the rounds go off single action, is it after they have been hit double action?

What ammo?

Winchester primers are notorious hard, I've got a performance center 625 with a trigger job that does not care for them.

I had a similar problem with an M85. The trigger had been lightened and the revolver would not reliably fire CCI primers in double action. (Federal and Winchester primers worked fine)

I purchased the revolver used from Bill's, they tried to fix it in house twice. First time there was no change, same problem with CCI primers in double action. The second time trigger pull must have been 20 lbs and the cylinder would lock up intermittently. They then sent it to Taurus and they fixed it functionally, but I wasn't happy with the trigger.

Jerry Meculek suggests using federal primers with any revolver with a lightened trigger and/or springs. He shoots on team Hornady so I suspect the suggestion is based on function not profit.

I have an 85 with a great trigger from the factory and 2 others not as good, I put wolf springs in these two and got 2 or 3 misfires per 100, went back to stock hammer spring, left the lite trigger spring in tho.

The firearm was purchased new and is still factory stock. It probably has maybe 800 or 1000 rounds through it. I've been shooting mostly reloads with CCI Small Pistol Primers and also Federal Match Small Pistol Primers. I seem to encounter the problem with either primer type. I have not had problems with the same ammo batches in my other Taurus revolver (66). Generally for any round that fails to fire in double action I'll advance the cylinder and fire it in single action.

I'd personally start with tearing it apart and giving it a really good cleaning and lube job.

Agreed. Take a good look at your firing pin make sure it isn't chipped or worn.
