Coonan Guys

Postby Eleanor08 on Sun Mar 20, 2016 3:34 pm

Hey all,

So I have had a Coonan on order for awhile now, and I anticipate that it will be in and week now. So I have a question on ammo, I have read a lot about what these guns like to eat, and what they don't. My question to you is, What have you found that works, and doesn't? I plan on staying with factory ammo to start, and I'm going to purchase a 1000 rounds once the gun comes in (500 or so for break in, rest for fun). Anyway whatever brand ammo I end up buying, I will start with just a few boxes to see be for I go neck deep and buy 1000 rounds. But it would be great to get some solid direction before I start here.

Thank you!

Is it compensated, standard or the compact?

I ran Hornady ammo and it ran great, get full power 357 and you should be fine.

It just a standard, not a compact.

I always thought they where kind of "meh" until I shot one.. 5 minutes later I knew it was my next purchase above all else..

I've got the comp'ed and ran about 200rds of factory and switched to my hand loads. Definitely follow the break in instructions, keep it clean and wet during the process.

A member here (who unfortunately for us hasn't checked in for a few years) has one. It ran great on reloads consisting of a 125gr JHP bullet over 22 gr of H110. This is the same 'full house' load I use for my revolvers. It's on page 357, yep page 357 :), of the Lyman 49th edition reloading manual.

Here's an old thread about us shooting it. (I'm the last guy shooting in the video). I shot the exact same loads out of my Ruger SP101, and the Coonan is definitely way more comfortable to shoot!

I've ran mine with lighter loads similar to .38 +P without a problem. They love full power thumpers though. I've seen almost every make and model that's been made and I can tell you they're all a little different.

I like Magtech, 158 gr. or Fiochi, 125?? I think, either way, after 200 or so break-in, it shoots flawlessly. Just had mine modified, now it's personal. My 4 yo Grandson's a lefty, so, someday it's his! lol

I've ran 158gr HP and JSP without an issue. It just need to make sure it's a full .357 mag load to get the recoil spring to cycle completely.

There are a few other folks on here that have a number of them in all different configurations.

I waited over a year for this one. I also got the 6" bbl, uncompensated. It likes my loads of 17.5g 300-MP with a 158g JSP bullet. (Photo doesn't show 6" bbl).

Will they shoot 38 specials?

Yes, 22 lb recoil spring for the big dogs and 10 for 38 specials. Springs included........................ .357 mag spring is waaaay more than most .45 springs! Even racking the slide is a lot harder than a measly .45. lol ;)

I have one, the only thing it doesn't like is aluminum case Blazer ammo.
I reload for it now, even mild loads cycled fine with 158 grain bullets.
125 grain full power loads also work fine
Winchester 125 grain 1200fps 357mag is garbage, won't cycle.
I absolutely love mine.

Just bought a Miami Classic Sholder Holster by Galco on ebay, LH, (ME). I'll post pics. Was told by Galco cust. service they don't make a holster for Coonan, I call BS. Using Galco #213B, [Galco also has a S&W 5" holster that, IMO should work fine also], and cover the whole barrel, long as it has that adjustment screw by the trigger guard.............. loosen the trigger guard screw and this one works just fine, except the retention strap needs to be lengthened about 1-1.5 inches, no biggy, also the mag holder strap needs another 1/2" or so, OR. A snap added to the very END of the srap. sure makes a 4 pound gun carry great. WINTER, I'm ready, give my a jacket! lol

SOLD!

I am LH. It is hard to find LH holsters especially for a Coonan, bought RH after I realized I shoot as good if not better RH than LH. However, I can't seem to remember I'm carrying RH. If SHTF It would take that split second to realize and draw RH. I now have a LH crossdraw, and LH shoulder "Miami Classic," for it. $40 and this holster is yours, made in Turkey, nice, solid, comfortable to carry. PM ME PLEASE
