How difficult is it to add/change Night Sights?

Postby yukonjasper on Mon Apr 06, 2009 2:48 pm

My Trijicon's in the G36 will need to be replaced at some point and I'd like to add as set to my Taurus PT 99. I'm wondering if its advisable on either to try it myself or if it is something better left to a good Smith?

Since the 99 has the adjustable sights - and I like that - I am not 100% on that deal, because I'd lose that adjustment.

I'm fairly handy, but I don't have any special tools.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I edited my original. I was referring to a Glock 36.

If you have Trijicon sights already on, you can mail your slide to them and for a minimal fee they will replace the lamps alone, turn around time is usually less than a week.

on a glock its a half hour job. On the Taurus, do you have a dove tailed front sight? If so when you have the parts its only a half hour job too.

I believe the Taurus is a dovetail. If so, what do you use to punch it out? Do I need a special tool? I'm assuming I wouldn't be locking ithe slide into the vice in the garage and wailing away with a hammer and nail punch, so I'm a little spooked about wrecking something.

I think mailing the slide to Trijicon is a nifty idea, thanks for that. Any idea what they charge to do the replacement and send it back?

I had it done for free, but that was a warranty issue... But last year they said they would replace all three lamps for $50... which is cheaper than buying a new set retail. As far as the rear dove tail, the Glock, at least, has a specific tool/clamp for it. They run $100 itself, so if you are only doing one it is not worth the investment. I know people have 'pushed' it out using other means, I would worry that could damage the finish to the gun.

If you decide to do it on the Glock, I may be able to help you out, but again, it would be cheaper mailing it back.

If it can wait until july the GSSF Armorer at the Oakdale match will do it for free while you wait on the 36. I would think that most places that would sell you the sights would install them for nothing or close to it.

True for Streicher's on the sight install.. I did notice that Bill's charges a $35 install fee (I believe), but they always try to nickel and dime you....

You need a sight pusher for Glocks. Don't try to do it with a punch, you will crack the slide.
