1911 or keep the HK?

A 1911 is a gun that you MUST and I mean MUST shoot a lot and train with to be proficient. The HK is a much simpler gun to learn to shoot well under stress.

Both are good guns - but unless you make the commitment to learn to shoot a 1911 well - I think that it is a mistake to go to that platform. A 1911 is a real learning curve and it DOES have a safety that you must learn to manage under stress.

I would never trade a 100% reliable gun for an unknown commodity. 1911's can be twitchy According to the CEO Of Nighthawk Custom - you either buy a Taurus, or well a Nighthawk........ Funny huh (that is actually a direct quote.)

Just a couple of thoughts.

...speaking of mistakes, there are a number of them in this assessment....
and picking a 1911 is not one of them, unless you are brain cell challenged or are paraplegic.....

however I do understand that it is just an opinion of one shooter augmented by a particular manufacturer......

I've shot a 1911 and it's a very accurate gun to shoot and I found that I liked it's feel. The only thing I didn't like was the heavy trigger pull on the SA that I shot. It was a entry level version. I do think I'll keep the HK for now (as I haven't the $$ to make a switch right now) and wait until I can afford to just purchase my next target pistol. I'm looking very seriously at a P220 Super Match or a P226 X5. Now that would be an awesome competition pistol!

...it is designed and intended as a life saver and defensive weapon, not intended for target shooting. One should NEVER carry a target gun for defense......

Well, I agree with you about not carrying a target gun for SD. I never intended to anyways as I have a Sig P229 SCT as my CCW. I've become a huge Sig fan and I started out as a HK fan as I just thought they were way cool. I plan to purchase at least one and most likely two more Sigs for my collection. I know that I want a Sig P266 Blackwater and I'm considering a Sig 1911 or a P220 in a Match or Super Match. As I said before... My ultimate Sig target would be a P226 X5 or X6. These to are well into the deep teens and over 2K depending on the version. Maybe when I hit the lotto!

It's not that it doesn't shoot well, but that after I've bought my Sig P229 and shot some other Sigs I really like the way they feel in my hand better for range shooting. I still really like the USP Tact though and I plan to keep it and just add to my collection in time.

From the HKs that I have shot, It is a wonderful range gun. The only crew serviced pistol that I am aware of...
My biggest beef with them is how big they are. They are too big and blocky for me to carry comfortably.

You can do that when you are a fictional character in a TV show that doesn’t have to carry for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

I will say their compacts are just about small enough to carry but their standard size is just huge to me.

I've handled one H&K USP in .45 auto, and it was awfully large compared to an equivalent glock or XD.

Figure they'd make a nice range gun, or competition maybe, but for carry I don't see the usefullness when compared with the above. Gotta have something I can stand to have on my hip all day. Size really does matter, along with weight. I like how my G21 fits better than an HK, and I like how a 1911 fits better than my G21.

I also like how my G21 would cost me $400 if I ever got it confiscated, while a 1911 would cost me $1000 or so.

Not to mention all the other reasons why I carry what I carry. But you talked about a target gun, so maybe the carrying part doesn't matter.

If it were me I'd sell the HK and get a comparably priced 1911. Especially if a Target gun is your goal. Go for something like you posted in your first post. Nothing wrong with a Gold Cup.

I had an H&K USP .40 Compact... Nice gun, almost identical to a Glock 23 as far as dimensions are concerned, just a touch thicker.

I did not like the heavy DA trigger pull for the first shot, but otherwise it was nice to shoot.

I ended up selling it because someone offered me quite a bit more than I paid for it... Also, for some reason the safety kept getting flipped on, which I found bothersome if I were to ever need the gun.

Ending up going with a Glock for the price, higher round capacity, and lack of the safety.
