XDm 9mm... not too shabby

Postby WastingAmmo on Sat May 30, 2009 1:47 pm

Finally got to get outside and shoot the new XD-m.. I must say, I like it!

I have always been a big 1911 guy, but i was looking to shoot a little cheaper, and those darn ads in all the Magazines made the new XD so handsome looking..
.. well i bought into it.

Any how, I made a 15 shot (sandbag) pattern of only .8" !! i had one flier in the group that brought it up to 1.1".

Fun gun to shoot, very accurate, and it went through 350 rounds of every ammo type i had on hand. WWB, Blazer Brass, remington UMC hollowpoint, and some hand loads,(don't tell the warranty guys).
No FTF, FTE or any other malfunctions at all!

It feels a little big in my hands compared to the Wilson 1911 i had with me, but when i changed the grips over to the small ones, it seemed out of balance somehow, so i stuck with the medium size ones. Basically feels like a Full size service pistol. but in a good way.

It's a really great gun... I've owned mine for a few months now... reminds me that I need to take it for another trip to range sometime really soon.

means you will probably have to pawn off that Wilson to pay for more ammo. Dibs.

Ha, I can't pawn off something that my wife doesn't even know i have yet.. ;)

and yes sRigs, I'm really liking the Full size guns lately. My little compact Kimber has been getting left in the dark cave of his case lately.. at least he has his night sights to keep him company.

I rented the 9mm XD at Bill's last week; the 3" compact. I was very impressed with how tight the groups were and how accurate the shot with Magtech Blue Box target ammunition. I almost bought it on the spot, but I really want to see the XDm version of this guy, and it is taking a long time for Springfield to come out with it. I really want it for a summer carry. I am not too interested in picking up yet another caliber (38sp, 9mm, 357mag, 45ACP are enough for me). So, I could use a revolver .. the Ruger SP101, but I am not as accurate a shot with that weapon for some reason (also a 3" barrel ... actually, a 3-1/16"; I think the sights might be a little off, but my groups are sloppy too ... so I am more inclined to believe it is user error). The XD compact was excellent and being polymer means no accidental burns when left in a hot vehicle :-)

I was a Glock fan, but I can't shoot them any more unless I stop shooting all other guns and practice with a Glock exclusively for a couple of sessions; then my accuracy and grouping are fine. I am thinking I will sell my Glock 21SF (probably 1500 rounds through it give or take a couple hundred rounds), keep using the Taurus PT-92 that is my Dad's gun (Taurus does make a few nice guns ... I shot a 6" 357Magnum revolver that was pretty impressive). I will probably try a S&W M&P compact 9mm as well and see how that feels [I am already partial to S&W] and make up my mind. Still, summer is here and I need to make a decision sooner than later. Something reasonably concealable with jean shorts and a tee shirt, accurate and reliable (obviously). I am a big enough guy that I have carried around a full size 1911 without any attention aim in my direction, but I don't think that will last as a full-time carry.

Congrats, I like mine! I switch between the G34 and the XDm9 and like both for different reasons.
:) My only Bi%ch about the XDM is the mag release. Every once in a while the mag release won't let the mag go, Hard as hell. It will work 50 times in a row then out of no where the mag won't release unless I push up on the mag first. For this reason I won't trust it for competition that requires mag changes.

I love my XDm 9, and I've had great results by and large in my range trips with it so far.

As some have mentioned, the mag release is very stiff at first. Mine loosened after ~200ish rounds and a lot of practice reloads to loosen the button. (Though I have never had a failure to release... just a stiff button)

The biggest problem I have with XDs is the mushy trigger they come with. I put a trigger kit in both my XD40 and my XDm9 and they behave much more consistently for rapid fire. Springfield also claims the XDm trigger is "upgraded" from the stock XD and has a shorter reset than the Glock. I really couldn't verify that - it felt basically like a slightly shorter pull-length XD trigger, with about the same mushiness, and the reset was almost identical to Glock.

Someone mentioned getting a subcompact XDm - not sure that will happen anytime soon. Indications form Springfield seem to suggest a .45 ACP version first, as well as tactical versions out of their Custom Shop (with longer barrels and attached compensators). I would LOVE for SA to release an XDm sc, but I am not holding my breath.

If you don't like Glock's grip angle, definitely look at the XD line.

I am starting to think that the XD is a good choice for others - I think that they are good guns for sure - reliable and plenty accurate and well just about right for their purpose - the ONLY thing that I cant stand about them is the trigger reset.

I just cant feel it as well as I can the Glock.

A trigger reset that you don't like is nothing to sneeze at. The entire point of popping off a couple rapidly is to use the reset and if it isn't reliable and is mushy, then it isn't much use for that purpose. I must admit, I didn't pay attention to the reset when I test fired it ... I am not sure what I was thinking. I can say it has surprising accuracy, but between my buddy and I, I simply didn't think to test the trigger reset.

Oh well ... I will just have to rent it again ;-)

There are several drop in trigger kits for the XD/XDm available that don't require a gunsmith (unless you want to use one). I did them myself and now the reset is much much more reliable. That said, you're adding ~$100 to the gun to get it where you want it. I don't like Glock triggers or M&P triggers either though, so no matter which poly I got I would have put a new trigger in it...

My 1911 spoiled me :-)

spend a good 4 hours pounding away with it again this past weekend. over 400 rounds went through it with out a single issue. I'm just amazed at how it never has a problem, no matter what i do. my Wilson, costing 4 times the price, isn't as dependable for me yet.

I personally didnt notive the mushy trigger or reset issue others are mentioning. it seemed pretty decent actually. my wilson has a 2.5 lb trigger and super short reset, and i didn't even really notice going back and forth between the two. mabey i'm not as discriminating, and I havent shot a Glock in several years, but i have no complaints.

also, cleaning the gun seems really quick and easy to boot. i cleaned 4 guns that same evening, and it seems to take around 15-20 minutes if i do it right, but the XD only took me 5-6 minutes. everything just wiped off so easily, and the takedown, dissassemble and reassemble is a breeze. really pretty happy with this thing..
