Wanting info on the Taurus PT 1911

Para Ordnance has come out with their "GI Expert", which is a fairly decked out single action (non-LDA) single stack 1911. At an MSRP of $599, it looks like a great deal. I am however not familiar with Para Ordnance when it comes to shooting one or how their quality stacks up against the usual suspects (SA, Kimber, Colt...).

I have a PT1911, and my safety just came loose. I got it Oct 08, just fell out the first time June 09. No big deal to fix. Just take the side of the ambi safety that has the "female" end and pinch it a hair tigher, re-assemble, enjoy. Not something to return a gun over, nor to get bent out of shape about.
I agree, the stock grips are horrible, but mine were changed out ASAP. I debated over the Bi tone one, but ended up getting the blued one, $550 new

I was looking at getting a Taurus PT 1911 but after visiting various shops around the cities and reading various posts on sites including the Taurus site I decided to go with the Springfield.

When I buy something I expect it to work right out of the box with no pinching or tweaking or breaking in. I have another hand gun with thousands of round through it. I have not cleaned it and I quit putting lube on it, still runs. I wouldn't bet my life on a Taurus.

I would trust my life to the Taurus. Infact I do, its my carry when its cold enough to conceal easily. Ive never had any feed/fire/eject issues, and 3 minutes with a pair of pliers fixed the ONLY issue I have had. How many people swap out safety's slide stops, beaver tails etc on 1911's for what ever reason? Does that make their gun "unreliable"? I will agree, its no Nighthawk, but hell for the price its a great gun. Not a thing wrong with the Springfield mentioned above either. I'd love a TRP someday.

Para has a new entry-level 1911 that looks pretty good. So do those guys who make Heritage Revolvers and Escort shotguns.

I don't see how you can say it is "fairly decked out" it is a stock 1911. The PT 1911 from Taurus has extended thumb safety, beaver tail grip safety and low profile sights.

These will cost you another 200-300 to add to the Para GI expert.

I don't own the Taurus, but am seriously considering it. I will be looking closely at the Gun Show this weekend at Brooklyn Park Armory to see what the going price is.

Save your money until the next big show and you'll find what you're looking for from the more reputable dealers, e.g. Hart Brothers and others. Milan Hart usually has a couple on his table.

Ha ha ha you must be talking about "Mister Hollywood" LOL the guy with the diamond earring in one ear and the silver hair. Ya that guy is overpriced and well ...i best not say on here Try DKmags they might have one. They are really nice guys too. A bit high on ammo (talked about on another thread) but their gun prices are not bad.

I liked the Taurus because of the features but to many people that i asked seemed to think that the quality wasn't the best and I heard a lot go back to the factory for minor this and that. so i continued to shop and research.

After a lot of research i found a deal on a used S&W 1911. it has most the features i was looking for. The larger beavertail, the commander hammer and the checkered wood grips. Ya, i know a lot of people don't like the external extractor of the S&W but the price was less than the Taurus and i dont see anything wrong with it having the external extractor except it's not traditional like the springfields or colts. I'm also thinking the resale value will hold better than the taurus. I took it to the range last week and it shot really nice! Shot hollow points as fast as i could pull the trigger and not one jam or stove pipe. The reviews were also good on this gun. Opinions?
