Any one here ever build a 80% 1911?

I am looking in to it as I think it would be a fun challenge. I know for the price I could go out and buy a nice Kimber or 3 to 4 Rock Islands but somethings about it really has me wanting to build my own 1911.

I've thought about it. I'd probably just buy all the components from Brownells over time.

I've thought about it a lot. Still haven't gotten to it. I've kinda decided I want to take the class from cylinder and slide before doing it my self though.

Screw it I am jumping head first into it. Whats the worst that can happen I get a really expensive paper weight? I will post some updates when the parts show up.

I'll let you be the guinea pig. I have jumped into the AK building world. I have made several decent functional AKs, just getting better at the finer details in craftsmanship. And AKs are a sloppy stamped piece of steel. A 1911 is going to take some patience and skill. Good luck man. I look forward to watching your journey.

1911's were first made with the machine tools available in the early 1900's. A competent machinist with adequate tools should be able to duplicate that, but not to the precision of high end CNC. Of course it depends on which 20% needs machining.

The kit showed up and it looks very good. The fit of the parts seem really good. I cut the frame with the jig and it is a very tight fit. Working on stoning down everything to get the 2 to match up perfectly. I have a few pictures I will post later. So far this has been really fun but stress full hoping I do not screw it up. Worst case I can get another frame and start over but it will be a while before I can shoot it and know if it all works good.

Frame and slide are now fit together and the barrel to the slide. Upper and lower half seem fit well. I have been taking pictures will post when I have some time. I need a beer then off to bed.

The instructions to cut the frame are very straight forward. I stopped cutting sooner than needed to make sure I would not screw up the frame. If I do another I will cut to what they say as it will save some time fitting the slide. I will post a few more pictures later tonight.
