I'm in the market for a new 1911-type pistol. My requirements - high capacity (for a 1911 anyway), 9mm, light rail, 5" barrel. Front strap checkering would be nice but I can add that if necessary. Threaded barrel would be nice but I can add that as well. Looking for something reliable enough for defense, not a game gun. What's out there that meets these needs? For comparison, I currently shoot a Kimber Custom 1911 in .45 and love it. Just looking to go a bit lighter and more rounds.

Check out STI now Staccato. They have single stack and double stack models. Been very impressed with mine in .38 Super and price is quite competitive.

If you are talking single stack 1911, you only gain 1 round officially with going to a 9mm, although there are 10 round magazines. Frankly, load a light bullet and slow it down instead of getting a 9mm single stack, IMO.

The next step up is the double stack frames.

The STI/Infinity 2011 style guns are probably the best of those, and actually have higher capacity in general than the Glocks do. It’s also not unusual to have to tinker and tune the magazines before they are 100%.

They are also well over $1k.

Caspian used to make a highcap frame, but I haven’t seen one in years. They were similarly priced to the 2011 guns.

Para ordinance used to have the P18 in 9x19, but since Remington acquired them, I haven’t seen any of them.

There are some cheaper ones like the BUL but I’ve heard real bad horror stories on them.

Closest “almost” 1911 with reasonable price remains the Browning Hi Power, which used examples won’t break the bank.

I think Rock Island produces a 9mm 1911. Ruger also, I have had good luck with my Ruger 1911 commander in .45.

A friend had a springfield 9mm 1911 that didn't run very well. Even after a trip back to the factory. He ended up getting rid of it for a M9.

I would of liked to of gotten it off him, but he sold it before I could secure the cash.

After looking at RIAs website, it looks like they no longer offer the dual caliber kit?
22 TCM is a spendy little round but super fun.

From what I can tell 22 TCM is dead. A year or two ago RIA had over a dozen guns on their website for it... now there's 3. The Glock conversions never shipped in quantity and are way overpriced.

Unloaded 9mm 1911s are actually heavier than 45acp due to heavier barrels (smaller hole), so loaded up they are probably about the same weight

If you are looking to stay with single stack and 9/10rd magazines, check out Dan Wesson Vigil for $1200-1300. It has a lightweight frame so it will actually be a bit lighter that a full steel 45acp. They make it in all sizes you can possibly want - government, commander, and CCO.

I recently saw Kimber is making a lightweight frame 9mm 5” model for $600-650 but it does not have checkering.

Edit: Oops, just noticed the light rail in the OP. Dan Wesson Specialist and Springfield RO Operator come to mind. Sig may also make one, they make a bunch of railed 1911s.
