Tanfoglio - EAA handguns ... good / bad / ugly?

Postby Flip on Fri Oct 09, 2009 5:36 pm

I've seen commercials on some of the SD shows for EAA / Tanfoglio and don't know much / haven't heard much about their handguns.

How do they rate in quality on a scale from HiPoint/Glock all the way up to Sig / Springfield (Yes Glock lovers ... I'm only KIDDING!). Just curious if anyone has one or has had one and what they thought of it. I see they've done sub-contracting for Israel Military Industries. Can you get parts? Do people use them in competition? Your opinion?

Here's the info I've seen so far ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanfoglio

Thanks,

I purchased this gun, viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9022 back in July. This one is approximately 20 years old, but in good condition. I have put approximately 800 rounds through it since I bought it. Aside from a couple of feeding issues when I installed new springs (the first 20 rounds) I have had no issues whatsoever, and have been extremely impressed with the accuracy.

Mine is extremely durable and well built. I would compare mine to the similar quality/fit & finish as Sig's of the same period. I have not shot the new EAA's, but based on a purely visual assessment I would not put them in the same league as a new Sig Sauer. But like I said, I have not shot them, so they may be equal in quality and accuracy. If I had to rank the new ones... I would put them somewhere in between a Taurus and Sig... Leaning more towards the Taurus side.

That's just my .02, hopefully it helps you out.

I have one just like this chambered in .40 short/weak. I picked it up slightly used at a very nice price a couple of months ago. It's got a very nice SAO trigger right out of the box. Mine came with five 17 round mags.

I'll be using it at the next steel shoot.

Go here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showforum=202 to read more about them. They are a very popular race/competition gun.

EAA has parts readily available and I've heard their service is pretty good.

Our own Seismic has tried to blow a few of them up and failed and he thinks very highly of them. That's enough for me.

I had a 10 mm witness that was a very solid good shooting pistol the only reason I sold is was I'd didn't like the price of 10mm ammo. based off my experienc with the 10mm witness I'd buy another just in a caliber I can afford to shoot

I bought one back in the late eighties when FIE was importing them and EAA didn't exist. They are largely a copy of the CZ-75 design (mine is labeled a TZ-75). I can still order parts for it, through EAA. It is accurate, I have won my division with it in the Bald Eagle pistol league several times. It was one of the cheaper guns I own, but I keep going back to it, as it is accurate, sturdy, and the most ergonomically correct pistol I own. Tanfoglio has a growing following here in the States, but they have a pretty good following in Europe. You can get them from a base model to a semi-custom factory race-gun. Fit and finish, at the base model level, I would put them one step up from Taurus, similar to a CZ or base model Springfield. There are some slightly nicer versions that are perhaps one step below a Sig, and the full-on versions are all-out race guns. Take a look here http://www.eaacorp.com/ I'd pick up another, if the price was right.

Bought 2 in 45, one compact and one full size. Sold the full size here just because of the size. Love the compact. shoots right on etc. Heard horror stories about EAA service but have had several emails and phone calls answered promptly. Have not had to send a gun back for repairs. I'd say they are the quality of CZ (my fav BTW) with a lower cost.

i used to have one in 10 mm also. I thought it was a great pistol for the money. Fun to shoot and was accurate above my expectations. i dended up getting rid of it because it really didn't fit with the rest of my collection. i wouldn't say it was "ugly" but it's definetely on the goofy lookin' side.

If i found one with a decent price in 9mm i'd pick it up. decent sturdy fun guns are my opinion on them.

Considering all the praise... I've only seen them on the range and both of them had issues, both of them were 10mm.

I have a cousin, a baby eagle 9mm. I have yet to clean it and have yet to have any issues.

They are a good solid gun and can be as basic as one wants them to be or can be as wild as a race gun - in 9mm they are INCREDIBLY tame and easy to shoot well - fast.... Bill's has one that I like - stainless limited gun in 9mm....

I think that these are nice guns - not just for the $$$ - just nice guns....

Glocks are great no question - but they are not for everyone. I have been shooting the same G17 for well - 17 years now - it is very functional but there is a lot to be said for a steel framed gun like the EAA or the CZ75 Series.

Justaguy,

I'm not a Glock fan just because they don't fit my hand well or point well for me. Also, I have a great time giving you Glock guys a hard time ... so that precludes me from ever getting one.

I've got no plans to buy anything but was just curious about Tanfoglio / EAA as I've seen some limited info about them but nothing about reliability or if folks who use them like them.

Just a dope, the more you post the more you confirm your lack of any real thought process.

Not everyone wants, likes or can shoot a glock. And for those of us that have one, can shoot it and think it is a fine pistol, it still is not the only game in town. In fact that is one of the great things about this sport, the variety. That is one of the flaws of glocks, lack of variety, if you've shot one they all are basically the same. So if one model is not your thing, chances are another one most likely won't be either.

That said and 'Just a dope' ignored as normal, the EAA's are nice guns. The witness line is gaining popularity and as more aftermarket parts become available they are making their way in the action sports.

They look a little clunky(not as bad as a glock), but it is more of a personal taste thing. I've shot one in 9, 40, 45 and 38super, all ran very well. I'm not a 10mm fan so I can't really speak to those models.

If it fit you, you can shoot it well, you like the price I'd say go for it.
