Information on proper takedown of a revolver

Postby Stradawhovious on Fri Jan 15, 2010 2:43 pm

Ok, here's where I get into trouble with some of the folks here.......

I'm looking for some online information on how to PROPERLY detail strip a revolver. Specifically a S&W N frame......
I know that this question will ruffle the feathers of some, get some conflicting opinions about what "proper" is, and lead to many "don't bother" or "not necessary" or "you'll ruin your gun" or whatever, but that in and of itself isn't going to stop me. I'd like your input.

I Do know how but I must insist you get a copy of the kuhnhausen shop manual so that you understand how the parts interact. Really it will save you big money inthe long run.

Ruger .22 pistols aren't that bad. Internet hype has made it much worse than it is.

As for the revolver, all I can say is don't pry off the side cover if it doesn't come off when you remove the screws. On my 642, once the screws are removed, the preferred method to get the cover off is to "gently" tap the gun with a nonmarring tool until the cover pops off/out. It's amazing the gunk/grit you'll find inside there. I'm of the opinion it ought to be done, but I'm also one of those guys that believes you shouldn't carry a gun that you haven't taken down to its bits and pieces and put back together (a number of times). I find that I am much more comfortable working with the tool when I know exactly how it works. It's just a simple mechanical device afterall.
