Good deal? S&W 629-5

Postby Yourgrandma on Fri Jan 22, 2010 7:16 pm

I was at A STORE!! to play with pocket guns, as I was thinking about upgrading from my Taurus 85 Ultra light. Then we wandered into the "library" and I pointed out a nice 629 and kept going. My buddy confirmed my initial suspicion that it wasn't super expensive, so I asked to see it. I was in love, and the asking price of $469 is as much as I was looking to spend on a replacement for the .38, so I put it on hold so I could read up on them and get some other opinions.

So its in pretty good shape aesthetically, a couple scratches and some dulling. No big gouges or anything. It fits and feels far and away better than any of my guns, and I absolutely LOVE the feel of the trigger. Points perfectly and the grips are exactly how Id make them if I were so inclined.

Are there any issues I should check more closely for? Is $460 a fair price for one of these in good shape?

I'd edit out the location. Mitch called me and asked while you were there. Jump on it.

Pre lock, frame mounted hammer, reasonable bbl length. Yeah, I'm getting up early and grabbing it in the morning.

Indeed jump on it...I would...I'm a little short on pocket wheel guns. What is the barrel length?

As for what to look for..I'll tell you what I look at. The general condition..fit and finish..look for erosion on the top strap and the forcing cone(where the bullet enters the barrel),
look at the gap between the cylinder and the barrel while rotating the cylinder the gap should be about .006 in you should see no error motion,Check the timing of the the cylinder lockup..you do this by slowly pulling back the hammer until the trigger sear engages the hammer..stop pulling back the hammer just as the sear engages than check to make sure the cylinder is locked up do this for all 6 holes.

Keeping the 85. My mom just got her carry permit so I was considering selling it to her, but now I cant get anything to replace it.

Pics are on the way. Its dirty and Ive got a lot to do tonight, so they wont be glamor shots by any means.

Since my camera with attatched phone (Motorola Zine) is a piece of crap and cant communicate with the garbage software it forces me to use, I cant get pics onto my computer. Picture a big silvery object with a handle on one end and a hole that spits metal on the other.

What phone company? Verizon?

send your phone an email at <phonenumber@vtext.com> (like 1234567891@vtext.com)

when you get the text, "reply" the pictures back to your computer email using the reply key.

pull the pics out of email.

TMobile. I need to find the micro sd adapter and see if I can just toss the mem card in the computer. Then I need to call tmobile and bitch until they send me a new one. Its been getting more annoying since I got it.

Never heard of that method before though. Thats kind of neat. I'll try it if I cant get anything else to work tomorrow.
