Postby Hoss on Mon Apr 12, 2010 11:22 pm

Hey guys,
So i'm thinking about getting a new 9MM.My brother had a Glock 17 that i've shot a few times and i like it.I was as the store last weekend and was looking at the Ruger SR9.It felt really nice in my hand and seemed pretty nice.Does anyone have any experience with the Ruger. What would you recomend?
The Glock or the Ruger?
Thanks, Hoss

Read for yourself....

Rumer has it, (and I agree) SR9s suck.

I'm a glock fan, but no pistol is right for everyone. Beg, borrow and/or rent whatever you are thinking about buying, and test it out first... You will save yourself hundreds.

Not a fan of the Glock, nothing really wrong with them, I just don't care for them, same as I don't care for Fords. From my limited experience, the trigger is horrendous on a SR9 and most I talk to seem to agree. Now you could get a trigger job done on it, but usually the SR9's appeal is its cost, and the money you save you could spend on a trigger job and possible void it's warranty, so I don't see that as an advantage. Don't over look a S&W M&P 9, one of my favorites, or a Springfield XD or XDm. And yes there is that other option, the Glock, and if that is what you want, it should serve you well for many, many years.

glock all the way over a SR9. i have several glocks. thousands of rounds. not one issue. not a one. love 'em. if you can handle the lack of asthetics, they will never let you down. :D

i've heard a few stories of the slides on SR9's detaching from the frame after about 400 rounds. this happened to my buddies dad so i know for a fact that it's not just internet rumor.

my personal experience with ruger has been revolvers = awesome. autos = suck. i have not yet found an exception to this simple equation. i would never part with my ruger 38's and 357's. i've dumped plenty of P95/P98 and my LCP. my personal opinion for what it's worth.

if you're looking for a cheap 9mm auto, buds gun shop has S&W sigmas for $329 delivered plus the $50 rebate from S&W or 2 free mags. i'm seriously considering one of these myself.

OR Summit gun broker has police trade glocks for i want to say $375 (some with night sights even :o ), they may have some beretta 92's left. last i looked those were going for like $275.

I recomend Thunderjohn here onthe board to do a transfer if you pick either of these up. He's a great guy and super easy to work with.

My $0.02

Glock vs. SR9 is night and day. For the money, I'd take the Glock every time.

Based on what I've seen with Ruger SR9s in my carry classes, I wouldn't use one to hold down papers to keep them from blowing away. For the price, there is better stuff out there.

The Ruger P-89DC was deadnuts reliable and carried a decent amount of rounds for it's size. (15) however, that said I'd rather shoot my Glock, M&P, Hi-Power or CZ any day.

As long as you're checking out plastic pistols, also look at the FNP-9 or the FNX9 (basically the FNP9 freshened up for 2010). Made by Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FN's US subsidiary). I've got the FNP-40 and it feels and shoots well to me. IMO it's a very under-rated pistol with US comsumers. Current prices should be on par with or below competing brands. Main difference is it has a traditional style external hammer (which I personally like), rather than being striker fired like most of the others.

If I were in the market, another poly 9 I'd look at based on price alone is the SW Sigma, but I know nothing about it, god or bad.

I've got one of the newer models in 40, (The S&W 40VE) and have no complaints. Basically a throw away gun, but it's reliable (FFE every single time without fail) and I can hit what Im aiming at.

Best of all you can find one for around the $250 mark.

I have had a whole lot of people who tell me they are "crap" or "junk", but when pressed for a reason the only answer I get is "Er, um, a, THEY JUST ARE, OK?" I have yet to have anyone give me a legitimate reason other than the hard trigger pull and long reset, which isn't that big of a issue in my book.

I've shot both the FN and the Sigma, and the trigger, when compared to a Glock, XD, or M&P, was longer travel, harder pull, and not as smooth. The FN I fired was a traditional double-action model, which I personally don't prefer.

Granted, those pistols move you into the next price bracket, but I think the difference is worth the money. If you are looking for these on the used market, you can get some great deals.

Having said all of that, Rule #1 of a gunfight is "Bring a gun."

I pulled the trigger on a .45 Kahr at Bill's Shooters' Show last weekend and I was amazed. It's DA, so it's long, but very easy and smooth and a constant pull the whole way.

I put a few rounds through Strad's 40VE last weekend. It went bang every time I pulled the trigger and the bullet went exactly where the barrel was pointed. It's priced accordingly.

Shoot them all, and see what you like... There are many forum members that own all of what you have listed, and are more than happy for an excuse to get out to the range.

Never owned a Ruger so all I can base judgment on is what others have said. I have and love my FNP-9. Picked it up used for a great price, (at Bill's even!) I believe it to be the best 9mm I have shot. It is comfortable in my hand and has nice trigger. I like the fact it has real hammer! Mine is a DA/SA version.

I also like my Glock! Advantage Glock due to low cost accessories and easy to modify. I recommend the Glock 19.

This weekend in Little Falls is a gun fair put on by Reeds Sporting Goods & Rice Creek with tons of vendors and lots of guns available to try out (for free, supposedly). Might be worth the trip to try out several pistols at one spot. Look here for info & links: http://mnguntalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=13816
