single stack or slim gun recommendations

Postby plblark on Tue Jun 08, 2010 7:27 am

I had a student on Saturday with small hands. The distance between his thumb and first finger joints is about the same as that between my last two finger joints (not much) and his fingers are very short. For comparison, his hands fit my LCP just fine though the LCP was too short in the grip.

He was shooting a NIB Glock 19 he bought at Gander mountain and had to radically change hand position to go from poor trigger placement to marginal magazine release placement.

Even with that, he shot a good target :-) but the Glock was pointed right into his thumb knuckle and over time that could get painful even without the "can't reach the controls easily" issues.

So, since I have large hands and little single stack / slim handgun experience, I thought I'd bring the question to the brain trust.

I also have small girley hands. I've had best luck with my 1911 with slim line grips. You still need to change position to hit the mag release, but everyone I know including those with very very small hands, can get their hands around it.

Kel-Tec PF-9 or P-3AT depending on caliber preference.

Springfield EMP's will feel smaller than an Officer's model. Have him look at a Kahr P9 too. You can get short triggers for 1911's too.

Concur, 1911's are great for folks with smaller hands.

The new Glock Gen 4's have a substantially reduced grip size as well, which is nice for those of us with little hands.

my fiance's hands are literally almost half the size of mine. 4'' 1911, full size grip, single stack. We put a short trigger in. Even with normal grip panels it fits her "correctly." Slide in line with the forearm, trigger finger touches trigger in middle of the finger pad, etc.

what about things other than hand size? Strong person or a weak person? If their grip is sort of weak/loose, smaller lighter guns might not be the ticket for longer range sessions.

I have small hands too -- I've found my 1911s (all with slim grips) work just fine in Officer, Commander, and Full-Size... as long as I have the thin grips on there...
