New Base 1911's ... Any Good?

Postby Flip on Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:01 am

Hi All,

It seems a lot of companies are starting to put out a mil-spec-ish 1911.

Dessert Eagle
http://www.magnumresearch.com/Desert_Eagle_1911.asp

Remington
http://www.1911r1.com/

Para (not their first 1911 but a newer "entry" 1911)
http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_expert.php

Others?

I'm wondering if anyone has long-term experience (ie > 5K rounds) with any of the "New" base 1911's and can speak to quality / reliability / etc. vs. similar 1911's that have been around awhile (Springer Mil-Spec, Armscor tactical, base Kimber etc). It seems there's getting to be a lot of competition in the market & I'm wondering if the new entries are better, worse, or the same as the old work horses.

I have the Magnum Research Desert Eagle 1911, 100rds so far no issues. I got mine from thunderjohn who is on the board. Great guy to deal with. Good Luck

Capra's on hwy 65 in Blaine has the Remington in stock. I think it was in the mid 500's, but I didn't look at it when I was there today.

Just found out that Bersa has a 1911. I'd never heard of this before but apparently, they're made by Metroarms in the Philipeans (not Armscor).

info about them:
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342972

they can be had for the low $400's:
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_178/products_id/49736

The reviews on the Bud's page (immdiately above) has one guy who is very unhappy with the finish and two guys who give it 5/5 stars.

Saw one at Gunstop yesterday. Had no idea what it was.

Those reviews make me suspicious, because the positive ones are full of hyperbole, and the negative one doesn't mention the thing being fired, which makes me think that we've got one guy who is disappointed with the finish but hasn't shot the gun, and two people who are plants (comparing a Philippine cast 1911 with a Wilson Combat? Seriously?). So we still don't have any real review of the item, besides it's finish, and that's not really something I think a person should be caring about on a 1911 for less than 425.

If you check thefiringline.com's link, there's a link to gunblast.com, where the author does a fairly decent write-up on it....

I've never really trusted gunblast, they write like the softball reviews many gun rags write for their sponsoring brands.

I know a few people with Metroarms (Firestorm and American Classic II) 1911s and they are an AWESOME value for the dollar. 0 issues with them and the finish is pretty decent as well. I have a Citadel Officer size and it is 100% trustworthy. The parkerized finish isn't perfect on mine but for a carry choice I don't care as I can totally trust it..

I just wish one of these companies would come out with a slabsider, that is, no roll marks or billboards on the sidewalls, ish.

I think the guns are nice enough to pass without the huge logo's and most if not all the billboards, even on some pricey guns, look forced.

I ran my Rock Island 1911A Government model Saturday without a hitch. It's not given me any troubles whatsoever on my reloaded ammo.
